Washington state passes new licensing law for estheticians
Skin Inc.
A bit of context for the need for law change in Washington state. Estheticians are increasingly being hired by doctors, medical spas and clinics. They cost less than nurses and ARNPs, and their subject expertise is skin. In 2008 the cosmetic industry was a $60 billion industry; in 2011 it had increased by 5.3 percent ... in a recession no less. The call for estheticians to work in these medical spas and laser clinics is sounding louder as the industry responds to the demands of aging baby boomers.

Gawker
It's an established fact that South Korea has one of, if not the highest rate of plastic surgery per capita in the entire world, and a Japanese blog covering South Korean topic recently wondered out loud if the phenomenon hasn't unintentionally turned the country's Miss Korea beauty pageant into a clone parade.

Why yoga is good for your health

Reiki practitioner takes healing to new level
Illawarra Mercury
Virginie Christopher always felt there was something more to this life than what we see. As a child she was able to relate to and understand people on a different level, but it wasn't until she tried angelic reiki four years ago, after exploring other forms of healing and meditation, that she found her answer. Now a certified angelic reiki practitioner, Christopher harnesses angelic energy to help people heal and find inner peace.
I highly recommend becoming NCEA Certified! Continued education is paramount for our ever changing skin care industry! Our clients deserve nothing short of the very best.

Successful people have short to-do lists
CEO.com
The problem with having a million things to do is that it's impossible to do a million things. Busyness is a status symbol in modern life. We like to talk about having a million things to do, as if having every minute filled is a sign of importance. But many successful people don't have this same mindset.
How a massage therapist rocks on Pinterest, and how to copy her
Massamio (blog)
Pinterest is a great channel for massage therapists because the statistics are in your favor: recent studies show that well-educated women with disposable income are more likely to use the site than any other demographic. While it's not as popular as Facebook, Pinterest is catching up with Twitter and is now the third most popular social media channel. It's also a high user-engagement channel, as well.

8 reasons you should adopt a content marketing culture
Small Business Trends
If hustle was the key for traditional businesses to work, the hustle now has a new avatar. Earlier, it was pure hustle followed by the transaction. Today, it's all about hustling with information. It's more about informing, gaining trust, leveraging social media, amassing social proof, nurturing customers and then facilitating a sale.

The Washington Post (commentary)
In this era of school reform, private foundations and wealthy philanthropists have used their money to play a big role in helping to shape public education state and federal policy. Here's an interesting piece that describes the history of such giving and considers whether it is a good idea.
How to foster collaboration and team spirit
MindShift
Once they get to the working world, most students, in almost any job, will collaborate as a member of a team. And every student needs to be prepared for that environment — partly for employment opportunity, but mainly because the deeply embedded mental model of learning and creating as an individual process is obsolete.

Study: Some skin cancer patients still like to tan
New Haven Register
Surviving deadly skin cancer doesn't prevent tanning worshippers from going unprotected and even lying in tanning beds, according to research by the Yale Cancer Center. Failure to use sunscreen and using indoor tanning beds, which generate ultraviolet light to mimic sunlight, "significantly raise the risk of developing melanoma," which is the most dangerous form of skin cancer.

Microcurrent procedures
NCEA
It is NCEA's position that apprenticeship shall not be a substitute for theoretical and practical education of the esthetic student in a state-approved licensed school.
Microcurrent devices intended to be used to help reduce the visible signs of aging, beautify and improve the appearance of the skin, utilizing low levels of electrical current in conjunction with skin care products, should be performed by estheticians
Microcurrent procedures performed by estheticians, are not intended to cause a visible contraction of the muscle via the electrical current
In addition to manufacturer supplied, device specific education, estheticians who wish to perform microcurrent procedures, should take the necessary education to include theoretical and practical application, as part of their core curriculum or as continuing education modules
