Professional engineers now play a greater role in the safety of hazardous waste containment buildings, under a revised federal rule that requires them to certify that the buildings meet specified design standards.
The rulemaking builds upon NSPE's advocacy efforts to expand the PE’s role on federal projects involving the practice of engineering. The Environmental Protection Agency issued the rulemaking for the hazardous waste generator regulator program to address ambiguities, inconsistencies, gaps, and lack of flexibility to better protect human health and the environment. The changes to the regulations are intended to enhance the safety of facilities that create hazardous waste and the response capabilities of emergency responders with risk communication improvements.
When the EPA released the proposed rules for public comment in September 2015, the agency received more than 200 responses, which included comments from NSPE, state and local governments, the generating industry, the hazardous waste management industry, academia, the energy sector, and retailers.

As more state legislators and regulators take action on the procurement of engineering services, NSPE has launched an online map that provides the state-by-state details.

When Superstorm Sandy lashed New Jersey in 2012, Narayan B. Mandayam lost power in his East Brunswick home for five days.
The power outage also affected cellular service in his area when backup generators that powered the cell towers went down.
Sandy sparked the Rutgers professor's interest in helping to engineer smart cities, where everything is connected; renewable energy, green infrastructure and sustainability reign; and resilience after breakdowns, disasters and malicious attacks is critical.

A plan to build windmills off the New Jersey coast that has already burned through nearly $11 million and remains dead in the water is being cut off from further government funding.
The U.S. Department of Energy says Fishermen's Energy failed to meet a Dec. 31 deadline to have a power purchase agreement in place. The department is revoking most of the $47 million in funding it pledged to the project in 2014; about $10.6 million has been spent already on preliminary work.

New Jersey's aging infrastructure leaks up to 30 percent of its water before it ever reaches the tap. Earlier this month, a legislative task force began exploring ways to fix the problem.
One hurdle that emerged is that many systems do not have a handle on just how much water is being lost, leading the co-chairman of the group to ask an assistant commissioner at the Department of Environmental Protection why water-loss audits are not mandated.

Nearly 1,300 households in the township and 15 other municipalities in Morris, Hunterdon and Somerset counties had their well water tested in 2016 through Raritan Headwaters, the region's nonprofit watershed watchdog.
Mara Tippett, the well testing manager for the agency, said there is a simple reason to test well water.
"It's the only way to know if your water is contaminant-free and no one else is going to do it for you," Tippett said in a statement.

President Obama used a 63-year-old law to permanently ban oil and gas drilling in parts of the Atlantic Ocean, a step long recommended by coastal advocates in New Jersey.
The action expands upon a five-year prohibition announced by the Obama administration last month that excluded drilling and exploration in the Atlantic and portions of the Arctic Ocean in a new offshore leasing plan to take effect next year.
