A U.S. official told residents of New Jersey's back bay communities that it will be three years or longer before federal and state authorities finalize a wide-ranging plan to defend the bays from Sandy-like flooding, and some years after that until the plan is executed.
J.B. Smith, a project manager for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, told the first public meeting on the back bays project that it will take time to gather input from state and local officials, nonprofits and residents on ways of making the low-lying communities resilient to sea-level rise and the bigger storms that are expected to come with climate change.

It used to be every town wanted a backup generator to keep the lights on, if the power grid failed. Now, the popular choice may be a community microgrid.
After Hurricane Sandy left nearly 3 million people without power and shut down water-treatment plants, hospitals, and other critical facilities, towns across the state sought backup generators to provide emergency power.

The state of New Jersey has won an appeal with the Federal Emergency Management Agency that will provide more time and federal funds to complete the dredging of channels clogged with sand and silt by Superstorm Sandy.
The ruling is expected to improve the safety of New Jersey’s navigable coastal waterways for recreational and commercial boating and provide a long-term commitment to New Jersey’s marine transportation system, according to a press release from Gov. Christie's office.

"It's a catastrophe waiting to happen every day. There's a water main break every day in some part of the city," said pipefitter Mike Maloney.
Maloney told New Jersey's Joint Legislative Task Force on Water Infrastructure that at any moment water lines can rupture somewhere in New Jersey and that pipes leading to and inside homes, schools and public buildings often contain toxic lead solder — including the State House Annex.

Merging NJ Transit with the state Department of Transportation and the New Jersey Turnpike Authority, and investing the savings into road, bridge and transit projects is one possible recommendation from a legislative committee looking into NJ Transit.
After a third hearing by a Joint Legislative Oversight Committee on Tuesday, State Senators Robert Gordon, D-Bergen, and John McKeon, D-Essex, who co-chair the panel, said a report from the committee could make that and other recommendations to lawmakers.

South Jersey gets less state aid than central or northern regions despite a series of economic and social challenges that are more severe than in other areas, according to a study released by Rutgers-Camden recently.
The study, believed to be the first of its kind, found that the eight counties of South Jersey were less likely to receive "public goods" such as state help with education, health or transportation, than the two other regions — even when other possible explanations such as population size, taxable property, or voter turnout are taken into account.

The state is taking another stab at dealing with one of the region’s most persistent and threatening problems — unhealthy air pollution from heavy-duty diesel trucks traveling to and from its busiest ports.
With thousands of old diesel trucks using the ports each day, it is an issue long recognized as a health concern by environmental agencies and clean-air advocates, who have been frustrated trying to come up with effective solutions. The state estimates particulate or soot pollution around the port is up to 1,000 times greater than the level that is safe to breathe.

Drone technology is soaring to new heights and New Jersey is leading the way. Top researchers from the state schools met with legislators to talk about research, development and new applications, plus where the science is headed in the future. "Drones have become the popular vernacular for things that fly without a pilot. And the interesting this is that from the little toys that stay up in the air for maybe ten minutes and you can spy on your neighbors over the fence to things that re really the equivalent in size to manned aircraft there are very many exciting applications going on now to figure out how to do the dirty, dark and dangerous chores that maybe are not really so appropriate, or frankly affordable, to use manned aircrafts," said Donald Sebastien, president and CEO of the New Jersey Innovation Institute.

With sea-level rise accelerating, policies that focus primarily on the effects of storm surge fall short of adequately addressing the long-term threat of permanent flooding, according to a new study.
Parts of the tri-state region, including many areas in New Jersey, are at risk of being permanently inundated by sea-level rise, which already is beginning to affect some communities and critical infrastructure, according to the report from the Regional Plan Association.
