In its ongoing battle with drug smugglers, the U.S. Coast Guard recently offloaded more than 47,000 pounds of cocaine with a street value of over $721 million from the Coast Guard Cutter Stratton, in San Diego. The narcotics were turned over to federal agents. The seized cocaine was the result of 23 separate interdictions in the eastern Pacific Ocean by U.S. and Canadian forces operating in international waters off the coast of Central and South America. Criminals have used a combination of low-profile fast boats and "drug subs" — semi-submersible vessels — to try to smuggle narcotics into North America.

The former U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Acushnet, having been retired from Coast Guard service in 2011, has now been acquired by a nonprofit organization and is being re-fitted and re-purposed to meet new global challenges in environmental protection and law enforcement. Decommissioned in 2011, the Acushnet, designated WMEC-167, was known at the time as the "Queen of the Fleet" and was the oldest commissioned cutter in the Coast Guard's fleet.

New legislation for 2018 in California requires anybody 20 or younger to have the new California Boater Card in their possession before operating a boat. To get the card, boaters must pass a safety test, a sure thing for most who have taken a boater safety course, either online or with one of the volunteer groups that teach them. Continuing coverage on the fatal boat crash on Lake George back in July of 2016 that took the life of 8-year-old Charlotte McCue. Two of the passengers, who admitting to hindering prosecution by leaving the scene and trying to hide the driver from police, were sentenced Thursday morning.
Both Matthew Marry and Kristine Tiger walked freely into Lake George Town Court Thursday, but they left the building in handcuffs escorted into a sheriff’s patrol car headed for jail.

Two teenage boys were rescued by a brand new lifesaving drone in Australia while lifeguards were still training to use the device. The swimmers, aged 15-17, had gotten into difficulties off the coast of Lennox Head, New South Wales. A member of the public spotted them struggling in heavy surf about 700 meters (2,300 feet) offshore. Lifesavers instantly sent the drone to drop an inflatable rescue pod, and the pair made their way safely to shore.

The powerful winter storm that deluged San Diego in early January also cast a small flotilla of boats ashore on Naval Base Coronado, and the military wants civilian owners to fetch them. Military officials believe the vessels detached around Jan. 8 from Zuniga Point, a man-made jetty in the mouth of San Diego Bay on the southern tip of North Island where boaters often anchor for free.
