The airboating death of a University of Miami graduate, just a day after her graduation, has prompted the Florida Legislature to consider new regulations on the many airboat operators who take tourists into the Everglades. Ellie Goldenberg, 22, graduated May 12 with a theater degree and died in an airboating accident the next day in Miami-Dade County. Airboat operators on navigable waterways are required to abide by federal law. But out in the Everglades, and in landlocked bodies of water around the state, oversight falls to state laws, which have so far offered few requirements.

As crabbers crowd the mouth of the Columbia River and jockey for their catch, the Coast Guard soars above, ensuring some order to the fray. On some days during crab season, a four-member Coast Guard crew flies a C-27 plane north from Air Station Sacramento to help patrol crab boats off the Oregon and Washington state coasts. The plane flew along the coast Thursday for more than two hours, as far south as Oceanside and up north to Grays Harbor, a span of over 100 miles.

At the Calaveras County Superior Court recently, a Calaveras County Sheriff's Office Marine Safety Division deputy held a segment of a frayed green, blue and black inner tube above his head, the remnants of a July 24, 2016 boating accident that resulted in the arrest of a Copperopolis man who is accused of causing severe injury to two women on California's Lake Tulloch. The women, Rachael Pringle and Robin Tsai, were riding on the inner tube when the driver of a "cigar-style" vessel collided with it. They suffered cuts and broken bones and were airlifted to hospitals.

A boater was impaired and drove too fast on a dimly lit stretch of the Intracoastal Waterway when his vessel slammed into another one and killed a man, state investigators said. Drew Macke, 34, of Plantation faces charges of vessel manslaughter and boating under the influence in connection with the crash, which killed Billy Ineson, of Coral Spring, on Sept. 19, 2015.
