A Webinar for Maritime Stakeholders, tomorrow, March 21, and You're Invited!
As mentioned in last week's newsletter and in our White Paper, there are no "Safe Harbors" when it comes to avoiding or preventing the next cyberattack. So what do you do? What do maritime stakeholders (shipping companies, terminal operators, cruise lines, port authorities) need to do to prevent, prepare for and respond to the next attack on the horizon? Is "status quo" an option? I don't think so.
We would like to invite you as a maritime stakeholder and friend of the Academy to our live webinar titled "No Safe Harbors: Charting a Smarter Course" where we will focus on maritime operations and the recent cyber events and emerging threats in the industry while outlining a better route for our maritime partners.
WHEN: Wednesday, March 21 at 11 a.m. PDT / 1 p.m. CDT / 2 p.m. EDT
In this presentation, Mark DuPont, Executive Director of the NMLEA, along with members from the RiskSense team, will discuss best practices in cyber risk management that have enabled maritime organizations to significantly reduce their exposure to and protect their assets from cyber threats.
We hope you will join us for this upcoming webinar!

Ocean conservationists from watchdog group Oceana are hunting for illegal fishing activity, and one new method they are exploring for catching offenders is satellite data. The data comes from a monitoring network called the Automatic Identification System, or AIS. AIS was established so large ships could broadcast their locations and avoid collisions.

The Coast Guard has scuttled a plan to allow new commercial shipping anchorages along New York's Hudson River — but environmental advocates say the fight is not over. The Coast Guard says it has suspended the proposal for 10 new areas where commercial ships, mostly oil tankers, can drop anchor stretching from Yonkers to Kingston. It did not, however, close the door on a similar proposal in the future.

Today, law enforcement training — all aspects of training — is falling under scrutiny by activists and legislators who want to ensure LEOs are getting the best training possible to improve their on-the-street performance. Outsiders are now looking at how often officers train and under what circumstances. Meanwhile, law enforcement face challenges when it comes to training, especially when budgets are cut, it’s oftentimes one of the first things to go.

Police work is a complex job that takes skilled, well-rounded and intelligent people to do well. Being proficient in the skills needed to master the job of a police officer takes a unique individual, along with special skills that are too often overlooked. Every day, officers interact with suspects, witnesses or victims. They respond to extremely complex situations that often involve frightened or angry people. To do so effectively requires top-notch critical thinking and writing skills, which are rarely focused on enough as part of law enforcement training.

Some fishing vessels may be turning off their automatic tracking systems to avoid detection when operating in protected areas, with the EU launching an investigation into two European vessels operating off the coast of Africa. Nonprofit environmental group Oceana has analysed data collected from the Google-backed Global Fishing Watch map, which plots vessels around the world, and highlighted instances of vessels disappearing from public records.
