Police Week 2021
All of us at the NMLEA want to take a moment to remember those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in service to others, while others continue each day to patrol, protect and preserve our Nation’s freedoms, liberty, and blessings. If you haven’t said “thank you” to a brother or sister wearing blue, red, green, brown or white… today might be a good day to do so. Onward and forward, together.

Managing Conflict in Today's Climate
The biggest issue in public safety, education, healthcare, — in every business operation — is how people interact with each other. Too often, we are learning that our workforce has lost that skill. How are your managers interacting with each other, and with your people? Is conflict sabotaging operations and productivity? Maybe now is the time to focus on improving your performance, and time to “polish the stone,” through the program that has led thousands of leaders, companies and organizations (including the U.S. Coast Guard) enhance their people skills for four decades. Delivered over a four day period, Interact’s Virtual Instructor-Led Performance Problem Solving course is now available to Academy Insiders in May and an evening course in June — both at a special price to Academy Insiders: over 55% off! To get the discount code, send an email to info@nmlea.org. Seats are limited, so be sure to register early. To learn more, see the attached Course Overview document, or go to www.InteractPerformance.com.

Impact of dredging on maritime law
Marine Link
In 1875, the General Moultrie was the first suction dredge built in the United States and was used in the Charleston River — until it sank within a year. During the same era, the city of Houston and other port towns formed companies like the Buffalo Bayou Ship Channel Company to build special-purpose vessels to clear and connect waterways for commercial vessel traffic. Toward the end of the 19th century, the cutter suction dredge made its appearance and effectively dug and maintained water channels. The Foreign Dredge Act of 1906 prohibited foreign-built or chartered vessels from dredging in U.S. waters.

Cybersecurity is everyone's responsibility in an organization
Security Boulevard
Cybersecurity is no longer the sole responsibility of the IT department. It made sense that the IT team monopolized cybersecurity before, given the limited access to IT assets in an organization. However, as more people in companies are given access to computers and online resources, there is expediency in getting everyone involved in security matters.
