The Homeland Security Department needs thousands of additional port officers, according to its own internal analysis, which Democrats on a congressional oversight committee say could help stymie the flow of illicit opioids into the country. The need for more staffing at ports of entry runs in contrast to President Trump's DHS hiring priorities, the Democratic staff on the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee said in a report released recently, which has not included boosts for port officer staffing.

Harming a police officer is already a crime under federal law, and all 50 states have laws that enhance penalties for doing so. But a new bill modeled after a federal hate crime statute would make it a crime to intentionally target a law enforcement officer based on his "actual or perceived status" as one. Republican and Democrat sponsors of The Protect and Serve Act say its goal is to protect law enforcement officers from ambushes and violence for simply being a police officer.

In an effort to provide a more timely release of data to the public, the FBI is releasing three sections of Law Enforcement Officers Killed and Assaulted, 2017 ahead of the traditional fall timetable. These sections include data and statistics concerning officers feloniously and accidentally killed and statistics about federal officers killed and/or assaulted. The remaining portions of the publication, which present data reported to the FBI concerning law enforcement officers assaulted in the line of duty in 2017, will be available later this year.
