As of this writing, port authorities, terminal operators, shipping companies, cruise lines and other stakeholders throughout the maritime domain are now hard at work considering their strategies for taking advantage of the 2018 Port Security Grant Program (PSGP) that was just announced this week. And within this program, there is a unique opportunity for ports to reconsider their approach to one of the top threats to our country, to our economy, and to our maritime lifeline; cyber-attacks. The National Association of State Boating Law Administrators recently released its 2018 10 Most Wanted List of Recreational Boating Safety Improvements. No. 5 on the list is an item all of us who enjoy boating should try to help with: Address distracted boating and improper lookout. Although it's difficult to determine how many boating accidents actually happen as a result of boat operators or lookouts texting or otherwise using electronic devices such as cellphones, laptops and tablets, there's little doubt that such activities are a big part of the problem.
