NMLEA Expands Programs and Online Training
Having recently delivered online boat training solutions to the Navy and to state agencies, the NMLEA is expanding its law enforcement/public safety offerings through its PortTraining educational portal, through “aLEX”, (the Academy’s Accessible, Adaptable, Affordable and Advance Learning Exchange), and through it’s partnership with Interact Performance Systems.
This week’s featured training: Leadership and Strategic Coaching.
- PURPOSE: Strategic Coaching is for teams and organizational executives who know that in order to grow their operations in a way that is sustainable, they need to strategically define and build their culture. As Peter Drucker reminds us, “Culture eats strategy for breakfast.” So why not be strategic about our culture?
- LEARNING OUTCOMES: Our unique Strategic Coaching process has a tried-and-true three fold process:
1. Cultural Diagnostic and Strategic Plan - A one-day step-back with a business leader/leadership team to see what is (the good, the bad, the beautiful and the ugly) then identify what could be and develop a simple strategic plan that will attach our efforts over the next 90 days to where we want to be in the next 3 years.
2. Vision Framework - A single, coherent vision propels teams toward intended growth and goals. Our coaches will work with you to define a robust vision statement as well as a set of applicable values that will translate across every aspect of your business.
3. Leadership Pipeline - A simple and measurable strategy to recruit the best talent that uniquely fits within your team, train them in the culture and competencies that are going to yield the best results, deepen them so that they yield the best ROI and review them with growth as the result.
- TIMELINE: Strategic Coaching can be delivered in one-time 90 minute online “startup” sessions, or through ½ day and full day workshops. Additionally, a 12 month program that includes ongoing one-on-one coaching can be provided.

Illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing in the Pacific
U.S. Army
Task Force Oceania’s Pacific augmentation teams recently completed their first rotational tours providing continuous support to Pacific island countries in Oceania demonstrating U.S. Army Pacific and U.S. IndoPacific Command’s commitment to our allies and partners in the region.
And while the Department of Defense is committed to our allies and partners like the Federated States of Micronesia, the Republic of the Marshall Islands, and the Republic of Palau which have established international agreements for free association with the U.S., illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing is a serious threat to their security and stability and ours.

The U.S. desperately needs a civilian cybersecurity corps
NextGov
The pace at which the Biden administration and the 117th Congress are addressing gaps in our national cybersecurity strategy, including by nominating and appointing incredibly talented and experienced individuals like Chris Inglis for national cyber director, Jen Easterly as director of the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, and Anne Neuberger for the National Security Council is impressive. And so is the pace at which our adversaries act. The clock is ticking and we must adopt a posture that is as bold, agile and creative as the criminals and nation-states that are embedded in our networks and carrying out operations against us.

A new U.S. maritime strategy
The Center for International Maritime Security
This article outlines the path that led to the U.S. Navy’s current strategic deficit and proposes a framework for a new maritime strategy, one that I believe should be immediately developed along with the corresponding force structure assessment. With a modest 5% additional investment in the Navy over the next five years, 90% of the changes required by this strategy can be achieved.

How to build a cybersecurity culture
Security Boulevard
Are you tired of seeing your papier-mâché network defenses torn to shreds? Do you wish you could fake your way through yet another audit, but fear being exposed by a data leak? Are hoodlums in Adidas clothing using your IT infrastructure as their own personal cloud? Well, tough. Cybercriminals are here to stay and your security budget isn’t getting any bigger. (Case in point: from 2019 to 2020, security budgets for enterprises decreased from $18.9 million to $14 million.) You are left with one option: learn to handle it like a pro.

The USCG wants your ideas on how to keep survivors afloat
The Maritime Executive
The Department of Homeland Security's Science and Technology Directorate and the U.S. Coast Guard are looking for new ideas for how to keep survivors afloat during a mass-casualty event at sea.
The service wants a novel way to provide short-term lifesaving and rescue assistance in circumstances that make it impossible for normal SOLAS systems — like onboard lifeboats — to do the job.
