California is on the verge of banning facial recognition technology on police body cameras. The Golden State is one of the first states to call for such a strict policy. Originally intended to be an outright ban, it has now been scaled back at Gov. Gavin Newsom’s request. The legislation passed by California lawmakers now states that police are barred from installing it on body-worn cameras for three years. The bill awaits the governor’s final nod.

Recently, law enforcement and EMS officials were crowded outside a South Carolina restaurant as they responded to reports of a boating accident. Officials with the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources say there was a fatal boating accident off a marina where one man died and two women were severely injured. Officials with Richland County, South Carolina, are investigating. Kaley Lawrimore with SC DNR confirmed that Tracy Gordon, 53, was driving a high-speed cigarette boat when it rode over the top of a pontoon boat carrying a Chapin man, his wife and daughter.

The Coast Guard brought ashore more than six tons of cocaine recently in Miami, the agency said. Four cutters — Seneca, Tahoma, Midgett and Valiant — intercepted a total of eight drug smuggling vessels in the Eastern Pacific Ocean over the past three months, according to Cmdr. John Christensen. The Coast Guard offered no estimate of the haul's wholesale value but a figure the DEA gave to the Sun Sentinel in 2017 might provide some insight.

The Bay Area father of an 11-year-old child has been charged with manslaughter after he allegedly ran over his son with his boat recently after he had been drinking. Javier Burillo, 57, was arrested in Marin County, California, one day after the incident near Angel Island, according to authorities. Burillo is a prominent real estate developer in Mexico and built the swanky Las Ventanas al Paraiso luxury hotel in San Jose del Cabo, according to a Marin Magazine article from 2008.

The Tennessee Fish and Wildlife Commission approved updates to the state’s fishing regulations at its September meeting which concluded recently at the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency’s Region II Ray Bell Building. In addition to the fishing regulations, the Fisheries Division announced its 2019 awards. Eric Ganus, who coordinates the agency’s statewide commercial fish, turtle, and mussel programs, was named Fisheries Biologist of the Year. Tim Williams was named Fisheries Technician of the Year and serves as the senior technician at Buffalo Springs Hatchery, the agency’s largest trout hatchery which is located in Rutledge.
