Fall may not be the best time to jump in the lake and go for a swim, but it is a great time to take a boat ride, enjoy the autumn colors, and go fishing. That's why Lifesaving Society Manitoba and the Canadian Safe Boating Council (CSBC) are reminding boaters of important safety tips. "It is important to realize that we are seeing increasing variability of fall weather, with cooler nights resulting in cold water in lakes, rivers and streams across Canada, despite the warmer days," says Dr. Christopher Love, Water Smart Coordinator for Lifesaving Society Manitoba.

A man and his dog were recently rescued when their boat ran aground on submerged pilings in the Yaquina River near Toledo, Ohio, according to a news release. The Coast Guard responded to a call for help just before 2 p.m., when a 36-foot fishing troller called Mickey hit the pilings and became stuck in the river mud. The man and dog are safe and uninjured. The man will coordinate with the Port of Toledo to salvage his boat, which is still stuck, according to the release.

Multiple public safety agencies have joined the search for a missing Berkley man who went overboard in a recent boating accident. The Herald News reported that Marc Hanoud, 35, was last seen a when he and Brent Osborne, 42, of Middleboro, Massachusetts, were riding in Hanoud’s boat on Mount Hope Bay. The boat capsized in the wake of another boat. Osborne was recovered from the water and taken to St. Anne’s Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

The Coast Guard suspended a recent search for a man and three children who went missing after their 14-foot boat capsized off the coast of Kennebunkport, Maine. In a mayday call released by the Coast Guard Northeast Division, the man said the boat flipped over and he and the children were in the water trying to get back to the top of the boat. He said if that was unsuccessful, they would huddle in the water.

Recently, the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators had its annual conference. The national non-profit presented awards to exceptional boating safety professionals. The award for national boating officer of the year was presented to Klamath County Sheriff’s Department’s own Cpl. Daren Krag. NASBLA describes the award as a symbol of, “the highest level of achievement among boating law enforcement officers in the U.S.”

A man accused of driving a boat while intoxicated, causing a deadly crash that took the life of a Hancock County, Indiana, teen, has been found guilty in her death. Eugene Butler Jr., 47, was found guilty of culpable negligence in the death of 19-year-old Vanessa Mauffray. In June 2016, Mauffray and her boyfriend, Ryan Necaise, were in a skiff setting crab traps on Bayou Caddy. Butler, who was driving a 20-foot fishing boat, crashed into the couple’s skiff.
