A new patrol vessel for Michigan's Department of Natural Resources was dedicated and named the Carl VanderWall recently, in honor of a conservation officer who passed away in 2016. A ceremony to dedicate the boat was held at the Petoskey City Marina, where VanderWall spent much of his time during his career and the event was attended by many members of VanderWall's family, friends and coworkers.

Drug smugglers, people trying to avoid homelessness and boat owners who can't afford maintenance costs have been more frequently abandoning vessels in the sometimes choppy waters off Coronado's Naval Air Station North Island, lifeguard and Navy officials say. The boats often break apart during rainstorms or high surf, sometimes emitting fuel and hazardous materials into the ocean and onto the beach.

The industry advocacy group Waterways Council warns of growing problems with infrastructure failures at aging lock and dam facilities on America's inland waterways. In the latest incident, the Ohio River's Lock 53 at Brockport, Illinois was forced to close due to a hydraulic system failure on its lower gate. Over 65 towboats pushing barges with grain and other commodities had to wait along the river in a line that stretched back over 40 miles.

The U.S. Coast Guard presented the Ports of New York, New Jersey and Albany with the Area Maritime Security Committee of the Year Award at a recent meeting in Brooklyn, New York. The Coast Guard's announcement said Area Maritime Security Committees bring federal, state, local, and tribal government and industry partners together to collaborate on maritime security; they create partnerships and networks, share information, conduct training, assess vulnerabilities, and mitigate risks in support of the Area Maritime Security Plan.

The Redondo Beach Police Department received the go-ahead recently to purchase a $115,000 patrol boat to increase law enforcement presence in the harbor and surrounding ocean waters. In making the request to buy the boat before the city council, Chief Keith Kauffman said the police department needed to have a greater "domain awareness" in the harbor and surrounding waters. The department has recently increased the number of patrol officers from three to six at the Redondo Beach Pier substation to deter crime, Kauffman said.
