The Coast Guard recently offloaded 27,300 pounds of cocaine and 11,000 pounds of marijuana seized in international waters in Florida. The Coast Guard Cutter James dropped bundles upon bundles of the seized drugs at Port Everglades on Monday morning. The seized cocaine is worth about $367 million, while the marijuana is worth just over $10 million, according to the Coast Guard. “The offload of over 13 tons of drugs represents the efforts of not only 10 Coast Guard cutters over 18 separate interdictions, but also the commitment and dedication of international allies and partners, like the Colombians, as we work together to disrupt the networks that profit from their them,” Coast Guard Lt. Cmdr. Jason Neiman said in a statement.

In response to that need, NMIO, with production assistance from the National Maritime Law Enforcement Academy (NMLEA), created a course, Introduction to Maritime Industry, for use by members of the global maritime community of interest.

Police arrested a Key Largo, Florida, glass bottom tour boat captain this week following an investigation into an incident in July when witnesses say he sailed the large vessel too close to scuba divers and snorkelers. But the owner of the 65-foot boat stands by his captain and says the incident is reflective of an ongoing feud between dive boat captains and tour operators over access to the scenic and protected reef off the Upper Keys. “Thirty years of working together has gone out the window,” James Hendricks, owner of the Key Largo Princess II, said recently.

Former commercial lobsterman Pete Morse is unlikely to forget May 13, 1994. That’s the date when he was involved in a maritime accident where the ship sank at sea. If it wasn’t for his lifeboat and survival suit, he said he wouldn’t be alive today. Morse, of Buxton, Maine, who now runs a deep-sea fishing charter business out of South Portland, Maine, said ever since he’s been adamant about taking extra precautions while at sea. However, he said many lobstermen are hesitant to follow Coast Guard recommendations when it comes to safety.
