In March 2018, hackers targeted Atlanta’s computer networks. Demanding $51,000 in bitcoins, the cyberattack held the city hostage for nearly a week. Some city services reverted to pen and paper to continue operations. But the city refused to pay: It didn’t want to reward and encourage more ransomware attacks, and there was no guarantee that systems would be restored even if it paid. Ultimately, the financial hit to the city was far higher than the ransom. One city report uncovered by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution estimated that the costs associated with the attack could reach as high as $17 million.

More and more, businesses blame cyberattacks on “human error,” that single employee who, either accidentally or maliciously, made a decision that resulted in a security breach. You probably remember the 2017 Equifax breach that exposed over 145 million Americans’ personal information. At the time, the ex-CEO blamed a single employee for failing to install a patch for a vulnerability that the hackers then exploited. But a recent lawsuit argues that the breach was actually the inevitable result of Equifax’s poor cybersecurity practices. How poor? Equifax was protecting sensitive information on a portal to manage credit disputes by using “admin” as both the username and the password.

The National Transportation Safety Board determines that the probable cause of the overturning was the industry practice of not regularly providing liftboat operators with adequate information about the seafloor composition, which resulted in the instability of the port leg due to unidentified conditions/hazards in seabed composition near the port leg landing site.

Mike Barcaskey writes "Hey there, Captain! How was the boating season? Plenty of fun days on the water I bet. But where is that boat now? Still in a slip? On the driveway? Or worse yet in the backyard under an old tarp? The sun filled days may be over but attending to your boat and other boat-related matters is always in season. Ed Crognale of Boat World in Bridgewater, Pennsylvania, has seen plenty of problems due to the lack of winterizing. 'Cracked blocks, manifolds, drives. Lots of problems occur from not winterizing your boat,' said Crognale."
