While praising efforts to protect the Los Angeles and Long Beach ports from terrorist and cyber attacks, members of Congress aired concerns recently about threats to public safety and the economy if federal funding for maritime security programs isn’t raised to meet new threats. At a rare on-site hearing of the House Homeland Security Committee at the Port of L.A., officials from the two local ports, the Coast Guard, Customs and Border Protection and the longshore union testified about what has been done to protect the facilities in the wake of two security scares earlier this year.

The U.S. Navy recently released the results of a comprehensive internal review of surface fleet operations, a sweeping study ordered by chief of naval operations Adm. John Richardson in the wake of two deadly collisions earlier this year. The report accompanies a separate document on the casualties involving the USS Fitzgerald and USS John S. McCain. The 33-member review team spent 60 days examining individual training and professional development; unit level training; command oversight of readiness; and the material condition and practical utility of navigation equipment.

Top regional leaders of U.S. Customs and Border Protection gathered recently for their periodic meeting to discuss security issues and they chose the Custom House Maritime Museum in Newburyport, Massachusetts to host the session. "Customs collectors and leaders met here more than a century ago," said Michael Mroz, director of the museum. "It seems appropriate that they are in the building."

Unmanned, adrift vessels like the dinghy become a bigger problem for the Coast Guard as the seasonal change brings big winter storms to the Pacific Northwest. Kayaks and canoes moored in the water or stored close to shore can be pulled out into Puget Sound by a storm's high tide or by a strong gust of wind. They drift around "aimlessly until someone reports them," said Coast Guard 13th District Spokesman Lt. Dana Warr.

Riverfront security is getting an upgrade in Paducah, Kentucky thanks to the city accepting a bid to install three new security cameras along parts of the riverfront. The new cameras will be able to monitor parts of the Ohio River. Chief of Paducah Police Department Brian Kruger said these cameras will be used to monitor potential natural disasters like flood levels as well as barge traffic under the bridge.

The U.S. Coast Guard has struck a deal with a Great Lakes commercial shipping organization to conduct maritime rescue training programs. The agreement sets terms for training sessions that will involve Coast Guard air stations in Traverse City, Michigan and Detroit and vessels enrolled with the Lake Carriers Association. The group has 13 member companies operating 49 U.S.-flag ships that haul cargo such as iron ore, limestone and coal.
