We are Thankful — A note from the Executive Director

NMLEA
As we all make plans to come together with our families and friends over Thanksgiving, it is our time to reflect, take inventory of our blessings, and to give thanks. Clearly, our families and the opportunities we are afforded in this great country are things to cherish and give great thanks for. Here at the Academy, we also want to give thanks for the chance to serve those who serve and provide the training, education, consultation and advocacy that our maritime guardians deserve. Our entire Board of Directors and our staff truly appreciate and give thanks for the trust you have put in us over the last 17 years.
I personally want to thank you for the chance to take the helm and steer the organization into the future. And as we grow our services, expand our resources and evolve into a member-driven organization, I am thankful for the continued opportunity to have an impact on the safety and security of our nation's waterways through the professionals that patrol, protect and preserve our maritime domain. I am thankful, that now as members, you also have the chance to put your hands on the helm, and help guide us toward solutions for you, your agency, and our great country.
Enjoy this day of thanks with those you love, those you work with and those you serve, as we collectively strive to preserve those freedoms, those blessings and those moments.
Onward and forward, together.
Deer Park Patch
A heartbroken Long Island, New York mother who saw her world shattered when her daughter was killed in a boating accident has set out to create change — so that no other family should ever have to bear such unthinkable loss. Gina Lieneck, of Deer Park, has created a petition at change.org for "Brianna's Law," which she plans to deliver to Gov. Andrew Cuomo, advocating for stricter boating laws. So far, she's garnered 1,100 signatures with a goal of 3,000.

The bravery two Hillsborough County sheriff's deputies showed recently is a credit to them and reflects the professionalism of the office. Deputies Benjamin Thompson and Trent Migues responded at dusk Nov. 11 after 82-year-old Leona Evans of Webster crashed her sport utility vehicle near Plant City, went airborne over an embankment, crashed through a chain-link fence and ended up in a pond. The arriving deputies saw that bystanders already had tied a rope to the vehicle to pull it out. But the doors wouldn't budge, and no one "had the tools to do anything," Thompson said.

Water skiing without a spotter would be legal in Wisconsin under a bill sent to Gov. Scott Walker. The bill passed recently would allow for a pilot to operate a boat pulling someone on water skis without a second person, or spotter, on board. The boat would have to be equipped with a mirror that gives the pilot a wide field of vision so they can keep an eye on the person skiing. The change is supported by the state's tourism industry. But the Badger State Sheriff's Association and the Wisconsin Sheriffs and Deputy Sheriffs Association oppose it for safety reasons.

Boat Owners Association of The United States (BoatUS) estimates that more than 63,000 recreational boats were damaged or destroyed in the USA as a result of both Hurricane Harvey and Hurricane Irma, with a combined dollar damage estimate of $655 million (boats only).
These numbers are strikingly close to 2012's Hurricane Sandy, which remains the single-largest industry loss with more than 65,000 boats damaged and more than $650 million in estimated losses.

Cool weather has arrived and boating season, which unofficially runs from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend, has ended for 2017. Throughout the spring and summer, DNR Law Enforcement was very active on Georgia's waterways, enforcing boating laws and encouraging boaters to safely enjoy their time on the lakes and rivers. Off the water, Division staff, in partnership with other government and private stakeholders, developed and implemented water safety initiatives to reduce the number of water-related deaths in the state. The recap of boating season stats and other activities carried out by DNR Law Enforcement shows that boating fatalities were down for 2017, but the Division knows there is clearly much more work to do to promote water safety.

Seven of the top 10 states for recreational boat sales recorded more in October than they did in the same month last year as the industry rebounded from a hurricane-influenced September decline. Sales in the main powerboat segments rose 10.7 percent, or 517, to 5,331, and industrywide sales climbed 9 percent, or 611, to 7,432, in 32 states that represent about 60 percent of the U.S. boat market, Statistical Surveys said.
