Earlier this year, a boating accident on Lake Murray changed one local family’s lives forever. “On September 21st, my family was involved in a tragic boating accident," Morgan Kiser told News 19, "My father was lost and my mother lost her leg. So, in honor of my father, we’re trying to bring awareness to safety so that no one else has to experience such a tragedy.” Morgan and her family have started an initiative called Safe the Lake aimed at bringing awareness to lake and boater safety.

The National Maritime Intelligence-Integration Office (NMIO) has been working with its state and local law enforcement partners nationally to better integrate their efforts into the larger maritime community. This collaboration revealed the need for training to expose state and local law enforcement analysts and officers to the intricacies of the maritime shipping industry. In response to that need, NMIO, with production assistance from the National Maritime Law Enforcement Academy (NMLEA), created a course, Introduction to Maritime Industry, for use by members of the global maritime community of interest.

TheCoast Guard Station at Oregon Inlet is advising all mariners to exercise caution when transiting through the Basnight Bridge, as there is currently extreme shoaling around the area of Oregon Inlet aid #17. According to a statement posted on the afternoon of December 2, the latest Army Corps of Engineers hydrographic survey displays the areas in which the shallow depths are occurring. As shown, certain spots are appearing as low as three feet.

Two helicopters, two rescue boats and members of a local police force all jumped into action after a kite surfer was seen drifting out to sea on Thanksgiving near Ocean City, New Jersey. Turns out, all it took to find the guy was a phone call. Some 16 hours after three Coast Guard stations began deploying crews in response to a 911 call about a black-clad surfer getting pushed out by waves, the missing person “called and reported themselves to be safe,” officials of the branch’s 5th District Mid-Atlantic region said recently.

The three boaters who were feared lost off Mount Desert Island in November were recently pulled from their 40-foot sailboat near Norfolk, Virginia, according to the Coast Guard. Charlotte Kirby, Nathaniel Davis and Wilfredo Lombardo were reported missing on November 16, setting off a Coast Guard search that was ended two days later when they radioed off Montauk, New York, at the tip of Long Island, to give their location.

Three people are seriously injured after a recent boating accident in Cape May County, New Jersey. It happened around 6:30 p.m. when a 26-foot recreational boat crashed near the Cape May Inlet located adjacent to the Coast Guard station. New Jersey State Police tell Action News three people were rushed to area hospitals. There was no immediate word on the conditions of the victims.
