Mark Your Calendar for 2023 PSGP Insider Tips

Coming up on the January 5th, the NMLEA will host a webinar that will feature some key speakers who will provide some "Insider tips" on the upcoming 2023 Port Security Grant Program (PSGP), and how Maritime Security can be elevated through the through a program developed by a list of key industry stakeholders – the Maritime Security Accreditation and Digitization Program (while being funded through the PSGP.) Speakers will include Rob LeClair, Vice President of Moran's Office of Maritime and Port Security (serving America's ports for over 75 years) and Mark Dubina, Director of Security Operations from Port Tampa (the first port in the country to become Accredited in the MARSEC ADaPt Program), to name a few. US Coast Guard helps monitor Mauna Loa's first eruption in 38 years

Mauna Loa, the world's largest volcano, is erupting for the first time in nearly four decades. Though it currently poses no threat to communities located downhill, it is attracting considerable attention, and the U.S. Coast Guard has been helping to keep an eye on it.

Florida strengthens manatee protections in boater safety courses

In response to a petition from conservation organizations, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission voted today to amend its boater safety course to protect imperiled manatees and other marine life.
The commission voted to include information about manatee protection zones, other areas where boating is prohibited or speed is regulated, and awareness of wildlife including manatees, whales, dolphins, marine turtles and sturgeon.

Migrant smuggling is a global organized crime that endangers the lives, safety and security of migrants. It remains a complex challenge in Southeast Asia, as many countries in the region are often both the source, the destination, and transit points of these illicit activities.
A study on migrant smuggling in Asia and the Pacific by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) shows that Southeast Asia has been a popular destination for smuggled migrants since the early 2000s.

Cutter Oliver Berry completes living marine resources patrol in South Pacific

The U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Oliver Berry crew returned to homeport in Honolulu Nov. 22 following a 38-day expeditionary patrol enforcing international living marine resources treaties and conducting joint operations with partner nations across the South Pacific, the Coast Guard 14th District said in a Nov. 23 release.

USCG invests time with Oceania partners, initiates Operation Rematau

The crew USCGC Oliver Henry (WPC 1140) kicked off Operation Rematau conducting a two-week, nearly 2,000 nautical mile deployment to the high seas and the Federated States of Micronesia countering illegal fishing and strengthening partnerships from Oct. 24 to Nov. 6.

Interoperability continues to 'grow in scale and sophistication' as China steers toward maritime goals, says DoD

China's People's Liberation Army aims to "modernize its capabilities and improve its proficiencies across all warfare domains so that, as a joint force, it can conduct the full range of land, air, maritime, as well as nuclear, space, counterspace, electronic warfare (EW) and cyberspace operations," says a new Defense Department report detailing China's maritime aims and capabilities.

Coast Guard Cutter Bertholf returns home following 77-day deployment

The U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Bertholf (WMSL 750) and crew returned to Alameda, after traveling over 18,000 nautical miles during a 77-day counter-narcotic patrol throughout the Eastern Pacific Ocean. Bertholf's crew conducted multiple boardings of suspected drug-smuggling vessels while patrolling international waters off the coasts of Central and South America supporting Joint Interagency Task Force-South.
