Soon, federal agencies will have a clear idea of how they are doing on basic cybersecurity and be able to compare their posture to other agencies across the government.
The Homeland Security Department’s Continuous Diagnostics and Mitigation program, or CDM, is providing agencies with a sophisticated suite of cybersecurity tools. As those tools are put in place, the associated sensors are sending data to a centralized dashboard, giving Homeland Security and agencies a holistic view of cybersecurity throughout the federal enterprise.

The U.S. needs improved cybersecurity policies if it's going to catch up with the practices in the rest of the world, Sen. Mark Warner said recently, adding that the government has failed to recognize the seriousness of the situation.
The Virginia Democrat, who serves as vice chairman of the Senate Select Intelligence Committee, said U.S. cybersecurity fails to provide adequate protection of critical infrastructure or guard against the dissemination of disinformation online. He made the comments in a keynote address at the Center for a New American Security in Washington.

The founder and CEO of RiskSense, Dr. Srinivas Mukkamala will share his views on the most dramatic security threats that will draw more attention in 2019. He will identify why new technologies will begin creating an even more porous and vulnerable IT infrastructure. Consider:
— AI might be your friend but it also powers your foes
— Robotic Process Automation (RPA) another crack in your attack surface
— DevOps Automation tools as targets for administrative controls and chaos
— API Keys becoming the keys to the kingdom
Dr. Mukkamala will illustrate how organizations can have improved visibility, detection, remediation, and response when dealing with growing reliance on these technologies in 2019 and beyond.

We have talked about this is previous Blogs and articles here in our newsletter, but given recent events, it’s worth revisiting. For many of you, these questions still remain in your maritime area of operations: What are your areas of concern in your maritime domain as it relates to an Active Shooter Incident (ASI)? What are you not prepared for? What do you need to address, plan for, train for and practice? If you have done some training and preparedness, when was the last time you practiced it?
For those of you still looking for some of those answers, check out this article that we posted a number of months ago on our website: https://www.nmlea.org/single-post/2018/02/28/Active-Shooter-Incidents-ASI-in-the-Maritime-Domain-Part-2.
We encourage you to look at the Active Threat Integrated Response Course (ATIRC) through LSU's NCBRT/Academy for Counter-Terrorism Education and discuss with us its specific maritime application. This curriculum brings together Law Enforcement, Emergency Medical Services and Fire to collaboratively respond to and mitigate the outcomes in a maritime environment. And the Law Enforcement Active Shooter Emergency Response (LASER) Course focuses on the immediate "Over-the-Rail" type of response an offer, or officers would take when receiving that call from a dinner cruise boat, casino boat, or ferry.
Talk to us today, and prepare for tomorrow's maritime challenge. Email us at info@nmlea.org, or the Executive Director at Mark.DuPont@nmlea.org, and we'll begin the discussion.
