A group of Port Authority police officers are being hailed as heroes after they apprehended a man suspected of detonating a crude improvised device underground near the Port Authority Bus Terminal during the morning rush. The homemade bomb prematurely explodedin a pedestrian walkway. At least five people were injured. The four officers were identified as: Sean Gallagher 26; Anthony Manfredini 28; Drew Preston, 36; and Jack Collins 45.

A vessel harboring 3,800 pounds of cocaine tied to drug cartels was recovered by the U.S. Coast Guard near Texas recently, according to a release from U.S. Customs and Border Protection. The drugs were found in a self-propelled, semi-submersible vessel, which is a low-profile vessel designed to navigate lower in the water to avoid detection.

The National Weather Service (NWS) will be collecting comments through Jan. 11, 2018, on a proposed consolidation (i.e., reduction in the number of) and reformatting of marine Watches, Warnings, Advisories (WWA), and Statements. This comment collection effort is a follow-up from an initial consolidation and reformatting proposal to consolidate all offshore marine wave/wind products into a single "Marine Watch," "Marine Warning," and "Marine Advisory." Based on feedback from the initial comment period, only small craft advisories are being proposed for consolidation at this time.

Researchers have developed a water cloaking concept based on electromagnetic forces that could eliminate an object’s wake, greatly reducing its drag while simultaneously helping it avoid detection. The idea originated at Duke University in 2011 when researchers outlined the general concept. By matching the acceleration of the surrounding water to an object’s movement, it would theoretically be possible to greatly increase its propulsion efficiency while leaving the surrounding sea undisturbed.

Sea Tow Foundation via Boating
To remind boaters of the dangers of Boating Under the Influence, the Sea Tow Foundation and Freedom Boat Club announced the Sober Skipper Program at the Freedom Boat Club Annual Meeting in Fort Myers, Florida. Freedom Boat Club is part of 150 groups in 145 cities across 29 states that collaborate with the Sea Tow Foundation to promote the Sober Skipper Program in local communities. When boaters leave the dock, the person piloting the boat for the day is encouraged to take a "Sober Skipper" wrist band and wear it.
