Trump signs spending bills with big increases for waterways and maritime programs

From Jan. 7: President Trump signed into law two massive spending bills on Dec. 20 that include healthy budgets for ongoing inland waterways construction and maintenance as well as port dredging and investment, while also signing a defense bill that supports shipyard grants and would ease the transition from military to mariner jobs.

Coast Guard and British Navy seize $46M in cocaine on 3 speedboats

From Feb. 12: Two separate busts in the Caribbean late last month seized a total of $46.2 million in cocaine, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.
Nine people were arrested in the operations, and the Coast Guard says about 1,400 kilograms, or 3,086 pounds, of cocaine were confiscated.

From Jan. 7 A Coast Guard vessel with 4 crew members aboard capsized after encountering several heavy wakes in Astoria.
The 25-foot Trailerable Aids to Navigation Boat capsized just after 11:30 on Saturday morning near Pier 39 in Astoria. Watchstanders at the 13th Coast Guard District command center in Seattle received 4 alerts from Coast Guard Aids to Navigation Team Astoria, which corroborated multiple good Samaritans’ reports coming in at the same time.
