From Jan. 24: After a year in which the Coast Guard made a record number of maritime drug interdictions and sent unprecedented numbers of drug smugglers to the United States to stand trial, the service is considering the possibility of investing in a platform that would do nothing but hold detainees until they can be transported to the mainland. Last November, The New York Times published an investigative story decrying the conditions under which suspected smugglers are held aboard Coast Guard vessels, sometimes for weeks or months at a time.

From May 22: The biggest growing trend among criminals? Using drones. Defense One reports that FBI agents were monitoring a hostage situation involving organized crime at an undisclosed location last winter. To confuse the agents, the gang used a swarm of small drones to repeatedly fly close to their heads at high speeds, forcing them out of their hiding spot.

From March 16: It's the biggest case of boater certificate fraud ever in Virginia according to the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries. They said one Portsmouth man is behind the entire thing. Captain Chris Thomas with the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries said 24 people paid Richard C. Harrell for his offer on Craigslist to take the test for them and send them the certificate.

From March 20: Ocean conservationists from watchdog group Oceana are hunting for illegal fishing activity, and one new method they are exploring for catching offenders is satellite data. The data comes from a monitoring network called the Automatic Identification System, or AIS. AIS was established so large ships could broadcast their locations and avoid collisions.

Fred Karash of Erie claims he was boating on Lake Erie in May, 2017, when Fish and Boat Conservation officers stopped his vessel, boarded and inspected it.
