From Nov. 21: A heartbroken Long Island, New York mother who saw her world shattered when her daughter was killed in a boating accident has set out to create change — so that no other family should ever have to bear such unthinkable loss. Gina Lieneck, of Deer Park, has created a petition at change.org for "Brianna's Law," which she plans to deliver to Gov. Andrew Cuomo, advocating for stricter boating laws. So far, she's garnered 1,100 signatures with a goal of 3,000.

From Nov. 21: The bravery two Hillsborough County sheriff's deputies showed recently is a credit to them and reflects the professionalism of the office. Deputies Benjamin Thompson and Trent Migues responded at dusk Nov. 11 after 82-year-old Leona Evans of Webster crashed her sport utility vehicle near Plant City, went airborne over an embankment, crashed through a chain-link fence and ended up in a pond. The arriving deputies saw that bystanders already had tied a rope to the vehicle to pull it out. But the doors wouldn't budge, and no one "had the tools to do anything," Thompson said.

From Nov. 28: For the last 227 years, the U.S. Coast Guard has remained always ready to defend and secure our nation's coastlines. For the last couple decades, however, the Coast Guard has pushed its boundaries out further, taking more aggressive stabs at the flow of South American drugs that, eventually, make their way into the U.S. The problem is that international borders are tricky for smugglers and there are quite a few between Colombia and the U.S. So, cartels often opt to take the path of least resistance, which extends out into the Pacific Ocean.

From Oct. 17: A new patrol vessel for Michigan's Department of Natural Resources was dedicated and named the Carl VanderWall recently, in honor of a conservation officer who passed away in 2016. A ceremony to dedicate the boat was held at the Petoskey City Marina, where VanderWall spent much of his time during his career and the event was attended by many members of VanderWall's family, friends and coworkers.

From Oct. 24: A man ran away after steering a boat into a docking area used by the Staten Island Ferry in St. George, New York, according to the U.S. Coast Guard and the NYPD. The U.S. Coast Guard received reports that a small recreational vessel had entered where the ferry slip is located, said a spokesman for the U.S. Coast Guard. A man then left the boat in the restricted area and fled on foot, according to the Coast Guard spokesman.

From Oct. 24: More than 750 boats sunk or "displaced" by Hurricane Irma have been removed from Florida Keys waters as part of a combined state and federal operation. The effort, called the Emergency Support Function 10 Florida Unified Command, is a joint operation of the U.S. Coast Guard, Environmental Protection Agency and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. Its primary focus is to reduce environmental damage from boats leaking gasoline or fuel and prevent accidents caused by sunken vessels that have become hazards to navigation.

From Oct. 24: They vowed to bring their brother home. And, after five long days of searching the relentless Niagara River, the body of missing Buffalo Police diver Craig E. Lehner was finally found. Lehner jumped into the river as part of a training exercise with other police divers at the foot of West Ferry Street, according to Buffalo Police. The U.S. Coast Guard said a cable connecting Lehner to his diving crew broke, leaving him stranded alone underwater.
