A University of Minnesota study expected to begin releasing results within the next year is exploring how women are influencing the operations of organizations within traditionally male-dominated fields like math and science.
Researchers from the Humphrey School of Public Affairs are working on a study examining the effects of the growing number of women in science, technology, engineering and mathematics leadership positions. This trend is affecting opportunities in STEM fields and how organizations in those topic areas approach research questions.

As the rate of women enrolled in STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) subjects is still fairly low relative to their male counterparts, researchers are wondering what it is about the realm of math and science that is keeping women away. They know it is not that women are incapable; in fact, women have proved themselves capable time and time again, especially in the U.K., where women taking two-year vocational courses in science and mathematics are outpacing their fellow male students. Yet today, women only hold 27 percent of all computer science jobs, while only 20 percent of women graduate with a related computer science degree. Researchers from Florida State University who have sought to study just that, believe it all boils down to a matter of perceptions.

Many people use this strategy in their job search, unaware that it's holding them back from being genuine and authentic. Have you ever used an absurd hashtag or related a regular difficulty as an epic fail? If so, you're participating in social media norms that cause word-inflation—the process by which powerful words mean less and less over time from repetition (e.g., you're not "dying" over fashion; your life isn't "over" because you're late to work; and your ex isn't "the worst person who ever lived").

Growing up, Armanda Kouassi's math and science grades were so high that it seemed a natural fit for her to pursue the science, technology, engineering or mathematics route. But none of her female classmates was headed down that path.
"Science and technology was branded as a boy's thing," the 23-year-old native of Côte d'Ivoire says. "None of my teachers would tell me that I have the potential to do further studies."
