We would like to invite you to the 44th Annual NOBCChE Conference and K-12 STEM Week held at the Raddison Blu Hotel in Minneapolis, MN Oct. 30 - Nov. 3. This year's conference is themed We Are NOBCChE: Community, Leadership, and Partnerships. NOBCChE is an inclusive community of STEM leaders focused on catalyzing STEM partnerships for the 21st Century, and we hope that the workshops and sessions at the 44th conference convey this message. Although job seekers are often reluctant to ask for more money when negotiating a salary for a new position, Jobvite's Job Seeker Nation 2017 Report find that those who do ask for more money are often successful. While only 29 percent of job seekers reported feeling comfortable negotiating for more, of those who did negotiate, 84% were successful in obtaining a higher salary, the report found. Further, a fifth of those who took the time to negotiate a higher salary were paid 11 percent to 20 percent more.

A first-of-its kind report on enrollment and completion outcomes for students of color at minority serving institutions reveals a number of disparities between what is actually taking place and what is being reported in graduation rates by the federal government.
The Center for Policy Research and Strategy at the American Council on Education has released a paper titled "Pulling Back the Curtain: Enrollment and Outcomes at Minority Serving Institutions," which provides in-depth analysis of data that was acquired through the National Student Clearinghouse , according to Dr. Jonathan Turk, a senior policy research analyst for CPRS.

Google will launch a $50 million initiative to help "the most vulnerable" prepare for the "changing nature of work," the company announced recently.
The money will go through Google's philanthropy branch, Google.org, to nonprofit organizations in the U.S. and Europe. Nonprofits receiving the money will also receive help from Google volunteers. The company said that it planned to extend this to other countries and continents as well in the future.

Ph.D. students may feel like it's taking an extraordinarily long time to reach the day they submit their theses and move forward with their careers. The feeling is not unfounded: According to the most recent data from the National Science Foundation's Survey of Earned Doctorates, those who received their degrees in science and engineering between July 2014 and June 2015 on average spent 5.2 to 6 years in their doctoral programs. Engineering students were the quickest, and training in psychology and the social sciences took the longest.
