Research suggests pandemic is widening engineering gender gap
New Civil Engineer
The group has said that before the pandemic, the gender gap in engineering already existed with women making up just 12% of the workforce but the current situation is “deepening gender differences in career aspirations in engineering or technology”. As part of the survey, just over 1,100 young people aged 11 to 19 were asked about their attitudes and the degree to which their educational and career aspirations have been affected by the pandemic.

Women in science may suffer lasting career damage from COVID-19
Scientific American
On a recent weeknight, biochemist and postdoctoral researcher Emilia Arturo read to her two children, tucked them into bed, then slipped into her car and drove 15 minutes to the La Jolla Institute for Immunology in California, arriving just after 10 P.M. In the lab, Arturo prepared grids of viral proteins to better visualize a particular pathogen — a type of arenavirus — and discover how to neutralize it.

How to be an ethical scientist
Science
True discovery takes time, has many stops and starts, and is rarely neat and tidy. For example, news that the Higgs boson was finally observed in 2012 came 48 years after its original proposal by Peter Higgs. The slow pace of science helps ensure that research is done correctly, but it can come into conflict with the incentive structure of academic progress, as publications — the key marker of productivity in many disciplines — depend on research findings.

Nature
Women, people from minority ethnic groups, first-generation university students and disabled people — to name but a few — are woefully under-represented in the basic sciences worldwide.
