Let's Do Chemistry! Participate in a workshop designed to help you and your team share chemistry with your community
NOBCChE
Do you enjoy using hands-on activities to share the excitement of chemistry with children, teens, and let’s face it, anyone who will listen? Do others look to you for advice on what to say and do when facilitating a hands-on activity? If you answered yes to these questions, the 5-part Let’s Do Chemistry workshop is for you!

This train the trainer style workshop reveals research-based strategies to strengthen your outreach efforts, builds a community of informal science educators and scientists, and provides tools for you to use when you train volunteers or educators to facilitate activities.

Choose the workshop schedule that works best for you and indicate your preference as you apply for a spot in one of four offerings of the Let’s Do Chemistry workshop.

Applications will be reviewed and selected on a rolling basis; the final application deadline for participation in the fall 2020 workshops is Friday, October 2, 2020. Individuals who apply for and are selected to participate in the workshop will receive a $1,000 stipend upon completion as compensation for their time and work. Questions? Contact Patti at p_galvan@acs.org or David at dsittenfeld@mos.org.

COVID's surprising toll on careers of women scientists
Forbes
COVID-19 is claiming an unexpected career toll among scientific researchers, and particularly on women, new research shows. If you are female, have young children, or work in a lab, you are more likely to feel the career-crunching effects dealt by the pandemic, according to a new study from Harvard Business School professors Kyle R. Myers, Karim R. Lakhani, and eight colleagues from institutions including Yale and Northwestern, published in the journal Nature Human Behavior in July.

White coats, black scientists

Why diversity in STEM is good for your company culture and good for business
WRAL-TV
There’s been a demand for more diversity in the workplace for years now. The year 2020 has only magnified this call-to-action as national brands like Target have publicly committed themselves to a more diverse and inclusive work environment in response to movements like Black Lives Matter. Why is diversity important? The reasons are many, but aside from being the right thing to do, more diverse companies have also proven to be more profitable.

Systemic racism in higher education
Science
The nexus of Black Lives Matter protests and a pandemic that disproportionately kills Black and Latinx people highlights the need to end systemic racism, including in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, where diversity has not meaningfully changed for decades. If we decry structural racism but return to the behaviors and processes that led us to this moment, this inexcusable stagnation will continue.

Job experts reveal major 'turnoff' in a cover letter
Yahoo! Finance
Writing a cover letter can be one of the most hated elements of a job search, but SEEK’s head of customer insights has some good news for job seekers: It probably doesn’t need to be as long as you think. “Cover letters are crucial. They introduce you to the employer, they’re a chance to bring out your personality, and they highlight the experience outlined in your resume,” SEEK’s Elyssia Clark told Yahoo Finance.
