Welcome to the student travel award application process for the 2019 Emerging Researchers National (ERN) Conference in STEM. The ERN Conference is cosponsored by the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), Education and Human Resources Programs (EHR) and the NSF Division of Human Resource Development (HRD), within the Directorate for Education and Human Resources (EHR). The conference will be held in Washington, D.C. on February 21-23, 2019.
A limited number of travel awards are available for students who are selected for poster or oral presentations at the ERN Conference.
The 2019 ERN Travel Award covers the conference registration fee, housing, airfare, and ground transportation. The conference will begin at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 21, and will end at midnight on Saturday, Feb. 23.

Dear Prospective GEM Fellow:
The current GEM Fellowship application opened on July 1, and its impending deadline of Monday, Nov. 12 (Veterans Day) at 11:59 p.m. ET is fast approaching in less than three (3) weeks! The program is open to US citizens or permanent residents who are available for a GEM industry internship Summer 2019 and wish to pursue (or are currently pursing) a graduate degree in engineering, computer science, or other applied science field, who currently:
- are an undergraduate junior or senior (i.e., you will graduate within 1 year of May/June 2019), or
- hold a bachelor's degree in a STEM field, or
- are a matriculating graduate student pursuing an MS or PhD in an engineering, computer science or applied science field who have at least one academic year (2 semesters/3 quarters) remaining for this funding cycle, specifically Fall 2019, Winter 2019 (quarter schools only), and Spring 2020.
- are a working professional interested in returning to pursue a graduate STEM degree FULL TIME.
If you are remotely considering a STEM graduate degree, you are encouraged to begin and complete the fellowship application by the Nov. 12 deadline at 11:59 p.m. ET. When preparing your online application, please note the following required information to have prepared.
- Current Resume (.docx or .doc formats only)
- Unofficial Transcript for each institution you have attended after high school
- In Part I of the application, Education History section, list your institutions attend since high school in REVERSE order, meaning list your current institution first and move backwards
- Statement of Purpose (detailing why you would like to attend graduate school and your graduate education goals and research interests)
- Name, email address, and phone for three recommenders (two required, three STRONGLY recommended; to submit a competitive application you must submit three recommendations)
- Recommenders should be a past or current collegiate level faculty member (Professor title preferred) or internship/co-op supervisor that can provide a strong recommendation based on your academic, technical employment or research based performance and ability to successfully complete a graduate degree in STEM. An internship or co-op supervisor that holds an MS or Ph.D. degree is ideal.
The deadline to apply and have a complete application on file is Nov. 12 at 11:59 p.m. EST. There is still time to participate. This award is sponsored by the Camille and Henry Dreyfus Foundation Inc. and recognizes accomplishments by individuals that stimulate URM students towards careers in the chemical sciences. The award consists of $5,000 and a certificate. A grant of $10,000 is made to the institution, and up to $1,500 for travel to the ACS National Meeting to receive the award received. Nominees can come from academia, industry, government, etc. Deadline for nominations is Nov. 1.

When Carolyn Virca embarked on her chemistry Ph.D., she noticed a clear gender rift right from the start. The men would grab beers before seminars or arrange other social activities that didn’t include her — the lone woman in the cohort. “They bonded in ways that I was not privy to,” she says.
Virca, who is now a postdoc at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada, got through her initial feelings of social isolation by bonding with women who had started the program a year or two ahead of her.

Recently, Nature publishes the results of our biennial survey of the income and career satisfaction of scientists across the world. And one narrative that emerges is heartening. Most — 68 percent — said they were satisfied or very satisfied with their careers. And just over half — 51 percent — had received a pay rise in the past year.

The difference between salaries earned by STEM majors and other college grads is not as stark as once thought, according to researchers at Harvard University.
Graduates with degrees in science, technology, engineering and mathematics do get paid more than those with non-STEM degrees, but the difference in pay as a percentage declines over a career, said Kadeem Noray, co-author on the study, “STEM Careers and Technological Change.”
