Many of my clients tell me about documents that prove their point, whatever the point may be. However, when it comes time to retrieving that document, somehow, it is missing. I advise you all to have scanners available and use them. They are cheap enough. The All-in-one printer/copier/scanner/fax machines are now under $100 with industrial strength models for a few hundred dollars. Having THE document available when you need it is of the utmost importance. As a side note, make sure the document is saved in a format where you will easily find it. That means give each file you save a name that allows you to find document! Save it in an appropriate directory on your computer, thumb drive or other digital storage. Also, back up your data constantly.

The CPT guidelines and descriptors to report office-visit codes will undergo extensive revision for implementation in 2021 (www.ama-assn.org). As a result, the relative value of these visits is being reviewed.
What you can do
On Feb. 25, the AAFP and other organizations sent an email to their members launching a survey asking practicing physicians to estimate their time, work, and direct practice expenses for office-visit codes 99202-99205 and 99211-99215 as well as a new prolonged services code. The link to the survey can be accessed only via that email.
AAFP
Take this survey by March 18. Your feedback is important for family medicine.
Earlier this week, all active members of the AAFP received an invitation to participate in the AMA/Specialty Society Relative Value Scale Update Committee (RUC) survey for physician office visits (99202-99205, 99211-99215) and a new prolonged services code (99XXX). The invitation and link to the survey came from AAFP President Dr. John Cullen. The subject line of the email reads "Please Participate in Important Office Visit Survey: Deadline March 18, 2019." As an active member of the AAFP, please look for this email and please take the time to complete this survey.
The email also contains a staff contact should you have any difficulty completing this important survey. Please don't hesitate to contact us should you have any issues locating this email from the AAFP. Please take a moment to read Dr. Cullen’s message here.

From 2005 to 2015, there was a decrease in primary care physician supply per capita in the United States, with increased supply associated with lower mortality, according to a study published online Feb. 18 in JAMA Internal Medicine.
Sanjay Basu, M.D., Ph.D., from Stanford University in California, and colleagues conducted an epidemiological study to identify primary care physician supply changes across U.S. counties from 2005 to 2015.

If you're wondering where illness is spreading in the U.S. right now, the official CDC flu map might not be particularly helpful; it's based on data that’s both delayed and not very local. Instead, try this new map that uses anonymous data from smart thermometers. When someone gets a fever, the data helps build a detailed picture of who's sick.

Atlantic Health Partners is the preferred vaccine buying group for the NYSAFP. Our members who work with Atlantic report very high satisfaction, most notably for the savings and customer support.
In addition to offering the best prices and terms for Sanofi, Merck, and Pfizer (Trumenba) vaccines, Atlantic now offers contract pricing for Shingrix. With ACIP giving a preferential recommendation to GSK’s Shingrix over Merck's Zostavax, Atlantic has expanded its program to include both shingles vaccines.
In addition, Atlantic can help your practice prepare for the upcoming flu season.
Key benefits of Atlantic’s program include:
- Strong flu program including Sanofi and Seqirus flu vaccines
- Most favorable pricing for Merck and Sanofi vaccines with “one stop shop”
- Shingrix program for GSK’s new shingles vaccine
- Excellent service and support
We encourage you to contact Cindy Berenson or Jeff Winokur with Atlantic Health Partners to best determine how Atlantic’s program can benefit your practice. Their contact info is 800-741-2044 or info@atlantichealthpartners.com.

A new study has found that a horrifying 530,000 families turn to bankruptcy each year due to medical bills they can't pay. In the end, it's easier to declare bankruptcy than to allow oneself to drown in medical expenses.
According to researchers of a new study in the American Public Journal of Health (APJH), the "financial toll of illness on American families" has perhaps gone far beyond the one-off anecdotes, such as the Nobel laureate who had to sell his medal to pay for medical bills, or 250,000 GoFundMe medical campaigns last year alone.

The World Health Organization estimated that 9 percent of the world's population had diabetes in 2014, and over 90 percent of these suffered from Type 2 diabetes. Moreover, Type 2 diabetes already causes 5 million deaths per year. According to a recent position paper, patients with Type 2 diabetes should be prescribed physical activity to control blood sugar and improve heart health. According to Dr. Hareld Kemps, a cardiologist in the Netherlands, diabetes doubles the risk of mortality, but the fitter patients become, the more that risk declines. Unfortunately, most patients do not engage in exercise programs.

The stethoscope — invented in 1816 — is long overdue for a redesign, according to Davinder Ramsingh, MD, an anesthesiologist at Loma Linda (Calif.) University Medical Center.
"Now, just over 200 years later, it is incredible to think that this technology has not been reinvented — especially when you compare the advances humankind has made in other areas," he wrote in a blog post on Loma Linda's website.

Primary care physicians (and especially pediatricians) are often the first to see conditions in patients that ultimately need to be referred out to a specialist for treatment. If your patient has amblyopia (lazy eye), the specialist he or she will need is a pediatric ophthalmologist. And even though amblyopia affects about 2-4 percent of children in the U.S., it's likely your young patient's caregiver has never heard of this pediatric vision condition.

To Governor Cuomo, State Senators and Assembly Members:
We are current and future physicians of New York State. With the New York Health Act, all New Yorkers will have access to health services without fear of financial ruin. We see paEents needlessly suffering--unable to pay for medicaEons, tests, and doctor visits, delaying treatment, and failing to address treatable illnesses. Every day, five New Yorkers die due to lack of access to healthcare. Nearly 2,000 lives are unnecessarily lost per year in our state. We cannot remain quiet while the current health insurance system causes millions of uninsured and underinsured New Yorkers to struggle with preventable illness and death. We can do beMer. We urge you to support the New York Health Act and replace private insurance with comprehensive, universal healthcare for every New Yorker.
