Bullying that causes children to stay home form school costs districts hundreds of millions of dollars in funding, a University of Texas study says. The university says its research, published in School Psychology Quarterly, found that bullying-related absences result in reduced funding for school systems in states that use daily attendance numbers to allocate state aid.

When young people struggle through addiction or substance abuse, there's also the question of school. Getting behind academically can be detrimental to learning and future success, but traditional school can be tough for kids whose peer groups use drugs or alcohol and where treatment resources can be limited. Research shows that students in recovery schools, designed to meet both academic and therapeutic needs, have better sobriety levels — and usually better grades, than students with addiction who remain in regular class settings. Across the country, there are just a few dozen so-called recovery schools. In Wisconsin, there is just one, with room for about 15 students.

As fidget spinners have become ubiquitous at schools this year, many places have banned them while others have decided to try to use them for educational purposes. Exactly how? One example is giving students math problems to solve for as long as the spinner keeps moving. That seems simple enough, but, as it turns out, a plug for the practice via tweet got pushback. And so, the question is being asked: Is using a fidget spinner for timed math problems helpful or harmful, and, more broadly, does giving students timed math practice lead to math anxiety?

At Boston Day and Evening Academy, there are no such things as freshmen, F's or detention. Sixteen-year-olds share classrooms with 20-somethings, students earn diplomas at their own pace and if anyone has a problem with a peer, they're encouraged to talk about it like adults. It is features like these that have helped former high school dropouts like Rocheli Burgos — and other students who have struggled in school — get a second chance at earning a diploma.

These high-stakes decisions include, but are not limited to, student promotion to the next grade level, student eligibility to participate in advanced coursework, eligibility to graduate high school and teacher tenure. In 40 states, teachers are evaluated in part based on the results from student standardized tests, as are school administrators in almost 30 states.

A few weeks into my new position as Chancellor of D.C. Public Schools, I visited a school where I asked a principal, "What's the secret sauce of your school?" It didn’t take him long to answer: "We know every child and they know we care about them." Great things happen for students, schools and communities when students know they will be challenged and supported.

Donnie Piercey, a contributor for EdSurge, writes: "Open up a new tab, and do a quick Google Search for 'The Internet is full of...' I'm guessing your autocomplete looks similar to mine: 'The Internet is full of lies.' 'The Internet is full of false information.' 'The Internet is full of jerks.' 'The Internet is full of terrible people.' I wasn't at all surprised. When I ask my fifth graders what they know about Instagram, Facebook, Youtube, and SnapChat, I'm often met with stories about the dangers of cyberbullying or unavoidability of Internet trolls trying to tear down a harmless video they posted on Youtube."

Levels of lead exposure near children's homes has a direct, causal effect on the likelihood they'll be suspended from school, according to the review of data on 120,000 students. The finding is very relevant in Rochester, where both those problems persist despite years of attempts to combat them. The most recent local data show that 5.5 percent of children in the city have unsafe levels of lead in their blood, while the Rochester City School District doled out nearly 9,000 suspensions to its 27,500 students in 2016-17.
