The latest annual report in a series tracking the U.S. high school graduation rate reveals that, while the national graduation rate is 83.2 percent, the nation could miss its goal of a 90 percent high school graduation rate by 2020 due to persistent equity gaps. The 2017 Building a Grad Nation report, the eighth annual update on progress and challenges in boosting high school graduation rates, reveals that only half of U.S. states are on track to reach a 90 percent high school graduation rate by 2020. Our education system has this funny quirk of grouping kids by birth date — rather than, say, intellectual ability or achievement or interest. But developmental pathways are as individual as kids themselves. And so there's a perpetual back-and-forth about whether to put certain kids in school a grade behind or ahead of their actual age. Recently we covered the research on "redshirting," or the practice of starting kindergarten a little late. That researcher concluded that it's usually better to go ahead and enroll kids as soon as they're old enough. For one thing, they will earn more money on average over a lifetime with that head start into the workforce.

Have you ever overlooked a child for gifted education services? Be honest — then again, maybe they slipped through the cracks because, as many teachers do, you operated from some partially or completely inaccurate preconceived notions when identifying gifted students. I’m writing about an old problem. It's nothing new. But, before you stop reading, understand that this problem will remain a large problem unless school administrators and teachers do something about it.

Responding to our male students' fights, sexual misbehavior, or general misconduct with the comment "boys will be boys" is widely recognized as unhealthy and unacceptable. But when faced with name calling, rumor spreading, exclusion, and social sabotage among female students, the phrase "it's just girl drama — don't worry about it" is so widely used that sometimes it’s replaced with just an eye roll, a shrug, or a sigh — the phrase itself doesn't even need to be expressed in words.
