Good times roll for RV business
USA Today via Detroit Free Press
The RV industry is enjoying one of the nation's most robust comebacks. Fueled by a wave of retiring baby boomers with money to spend and time to travel, the industry, which has its hub in northern Indiana, is adding manufacturing capacity after a severe retrenchment period. Loren Baidas is president of RVDA member General RV, a company his grandfather Abe started in 1962. Baidas says, "Lower gas prices have something to do with it, but it has more to do with how far people drive than the actual decision to buy."

RV companies help spread random acts of kindness around country
The Associated Press via The Republic
Two years ago, a group of college friends formed a charitable group called ARK (short for "acts of random kindness") and took to the road in a beat-up RV to perform, well, acts of random kindness, such as handing out free ice cream in a poor neighborhood. The group got a lot of press attention, including an appearance on “Today.” Lippert Components CEO Jason Lippert saw the show, asked the group if they’d like a new RV, and then arranged with Thor Industries, Patrick Industries, MITO Corp., and Dicor to provide a $100,000 motorhome. Now ARK plans to hit the road in May on a 9,000-mile trip around the country to continue its mission.

Camping in a winter wonderland
MLive.com
It started a couple of years ago when a hearty Canadian family asked to winter-camp in Muskegan State Park, which is adjacent to the Muskegon Winter Sports Complex, home of the only publicly accessible luge track in North America. Park officials sensed there might be a niche market for people interested in camping while they enjoyed the nearby winter sports so, as an experiment, they opened 20 rustic, electricity-only campsites suitable for tents, trailers, or motorhomes. So far, the results are encouraging — with nothing but word of mouth advertising, 15 of the 20 are reserved.

Living small: At Las Vegas Airstream park, home is where the experiment is
Las Vegas Weekly
Zappos CEO Tony Hsieh is the force behind an investment group that's trying to revitalize Las Vegas’ downtown. One of Hsieh’s projects is a new "urban camping experience" – a cluster of 20 Airstreams parked on a 1-acre lot in the thick of the city whose residents share what he calls "the world's largest living room and community kitchen." Hsieh is hoping the unusual living conditions foster "collisions," or chance meetings that spur more human interaction. He himself is living in one of the Airstreams and says he sees more of his neighbors than he ever did when he lived in a house in the suburbs or in an apartment building.

Win customer loyalty with an unexpected experience
Entrepreneur
Just like sprinkles make a good cupcake truly special, service with sprinkles turns a sale into something unique. An unexpected, generous act — like the technician who helped an ill customer put up her Christmas tree while he was on a service call at her house — enchants customers and seals their loyalty.

Solve your buyers' problems by changing their perspective
Entrepreneur
When a customer is reluctant to buy because of anxiety over a factor he or she can't control — say, the uncertainty in the oil market — helping the person to think of the purchase as a long-term decision will lessen the impact of short-term factors. The salesperson could, for instance, note that oil prices have always fluctuated over the years, and that it's dangerous to make long-term decisions based on short-term factors.
