Scholarship applications due today

The RV Learning Center and RVDA associate member Spader Business Management have partnered to create the annual scholarship, valued at $14,875. General RV Center opens Tampa super center

General RV Center, the largest family-owned RV retailer in the nation, opens a brand new location in Tampa today. "RVing is more popular now than ever before," says Dennis Anderson, General RV spokesperson. RV shipments, both towable and motorized, reached 356,735 units nationally for 2014, a gain of 11 percent over 2013, and 2015 shows no sign of sales slowing down, with a dramatic increase of nearly 12 percent in RV sales during the first month.

Sales up 7 percent for Airstream

Sales at the Shelby County-based RV manufacturer Airstream were up about 7 percent for its second quarter, which ended in January. Future sales look promising as well. "The spring retail season is well under way, and RV show attendance has been up significantly at nearly every show," says president Bob Wheeler. "Consumer confidence seems strong."

Mercedes-Benz to build U.S. plant to make Sprinter vans

Mercedes-Benz plans to spend $500 million to build a new plant in Charleston, SC, so it can assemble its next-generation Sprinter commercial van there. The 8.6 million square foot facility includes a body shop, paint shop, and assembly line and will create 1,300 new jobs.

Thor Industries: Why the RV maker's shares are set to drive higher

Thor Industries doesn't get a lot of attention in the stock market, but the company's fast-growing revenue and profits have produced a balance sheet that's hard to ignore. And despite beating the market with almost 15 percent stock gains over the past three months, Thor's improving business suggests further gains are possible. Founded in 1980 by Wade F. B. Thompson and Peter B. Orthwein, the Elkhart, IN-based company continues to grow both organically and through acquisitions, having picked off competitors such as Cruiser RV and DRV Luxury Suites just in the past year.

Winnebago's newest motorhome passes drop test with flying colors

Smaller, more fuel-efficient motorhomes that are built on the Ram ProMaster chassis — popular in Europe — are beginning to show up in the United States. Winnebago wanted to make sure that its Ram chassis-based Trend model could make the grade, so the manufacturer hoisted one up with a giant crane and dropped it, upside down, onto concrete paving. It landed in one piece.
