When a 'disparate impact' bites back
The Wall Street Journal
The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s employee performance-review process is plagued by exactly the kind of disparate-impact statistics that the agency uses to prove discrimination in the industries it regulates, alleges American Banker magazine. According to confidential CFPB data obtained by the magazine, 20.7 percent of the agency's white employees received the highest performance rating, compared with 10.5 percent of African-American employees and 9.1 percent of Hispanic employees. The reviews are taken into account for pay raises and bonuses. The legal doctrine of disparate impact—which ultimately may be struck down by the Supreme Court—says that policies and practices that have a disproportionately adverse effect on protected classes such as minorities and women can be declared discriminatory without evidence of intentional discrimination.

How Thor Industries motors ahead of the competition
The Motley Fool
Owning more than a third of your market is an outstanding achievement, and Thor Industries had 34.4 percent of the market as of last November. The company’s excellent performance isn't just a recent thing, though, says this analyst—it’s been profitable every year since it began operations in 1980, even during the Great Recession. One element of the company's competitive advantage is on the production side, where it emphasizes assembly of components supplied by other manufacturers. This results in lower manufacturing overhead and higher return on assets.

Study shows park's economic impact on area
Nogales International
Visitors to Tumacacori National Historical Park in Arizona spent nearly $1.9 million in communities near the park in 2012, supporting 26 jobs in the process. That’s according to a new National Park Service report that examined visitor spending effects in all counties within a 60-mile radius of its parks. The report counted 35,158 visitors to TNHP in 2012 – an average of $54 spent per visitor. “It’s huge,” says Jean England Neubauer of the park’s impact on her nearby business, Santa Cruz Chili & Spice Co., a manufacturing and retail operation employing eight people.
