Local RV dealers kick off summer selling season with high hopes

People like Jim and Debbie Scott, who were recently browsing at the Spring Hall of Fame RV show for their very first RV, are one reason dealers this season are downright giddy — people are coming out to the shows to buy, not just look. The selling season has barely started, but already dealers say they’re noticing the growth. Matthew Troup with Total Value RV, an RVDA member, says his sales are almost double what they were this time last year. "The whole industry is up," Troup says. "It's a good year so far."

MARVAC camper and RV show season a success

The Michigan Association of Recreation Vehicles and Campgrounds' recent RV show was a great success for both RV dealers and campground owners. "People came to the show with the intention to purchase a trailer and came right out and told us that," says Dennis Grossenbacher, president of Fun-N-Sun RV. "We haven't heard that in a while." And campgrounds saw marked improvement in reservations. Steve Reeves, general manager for Double R Ranch in Belding, MI, says, "It's crazy how many reservations we have booked already — you can see that people are less worried about spending money on a vacation because they’re comfortable booking in advance."

Drew Industries expands internationally

Lippert Components, a subsidiary of Drew Industries, has bought Spectal Industries, which makes windows and doors for buses, emergency vehicles, trucks, and RVs. Spectal has manufacturing facilities in Canada and in South Carolina and Tennessee. Lippert paid $22.3 million for the company as part of its industry diversification strategy.

Flea market with vintage Airstreams opens on Fulton Street

A new flea market selling clothing, antiques, and jewelry from inside vintage Airstream trailers has taken over an empty Bed-Stuyvesant, New York lot. Akichi Flea set up shop in an empty lot on the corner of Fulton and Spencer streets in April and will operate through the summer. Owner Hisaki Kiyohara was inspired to open the market with five friends after they discovered vintage trailers during a cross-country motorcycle trip.

Wal-Mart's Sam's Club to roll out services aimed at boosting loyalty of small business members

Wal-Mart's Sam's Club division will be launching an online service for its small-business members aimed at easing access to capital by connecting them to lenders and credit options. The so-called "business lending" center will help its members gain access to capital from $5,000 to $350,000 through partners such as Lending Club business loans and SmartBiz Small Business Administration loans. The program is one of five services being rolled out to increase the loyalty of its small business members. They range from helping protect members' personal data to offering access to a network of accountants to cut through the confusion of bookkeeping and tax filing.
