MBA Insurance commits to bronze partnership for 2014 RVDA convention

RVDA is pleased to announce that MBA Insurance is a bronze partner for the 2014 RV Dealers International Convention/Expo, Nov. 10-14, at Bally’s on the Las Vegas Strip. RVDA Convention/Expo Committee Chairman John McCluskey of Florida Outdoors RV in Stuart, FL, thanked MBA for its "consistent and unwavering support" over the years as a convention sponsor. MBA President Bert Alanko called the convention "the engine that drives RVDA" and a once-a-year chance for dealers to meet in a spirit of unity of purpose. Thor Industries hits record preliminary sales for third quarter
The Elkhart Truth
Thor Industries reported that preliminary consolidated sales from continuing operations in the third quarter were $1.05 billion, up 13 percent from last year's third quarter sales. The company reported that motorized sales increased by 38 percent and towables by eight percent over the same quarter a year ago. Thor said it overcame several challenges to post the record sales, including losing production and shipment days to the harsh winter and a worse-than-usual transport driver shortage.

A small business gets an alarming visit from a federal agent

Ted Tatum of South Hill RV in Puyallup, WA, was recently threatened by an agent from the Federal Communications Commission with a $100,000 fine and a year in jail because his burglar alarm was supposedly interfering with a Verizon cell tower. Tatum was told to fix the alarm system or shut it down. With millions of dollars' worth of inventory sitting on the lot, the latter was not an option, says Tatum. Luckily, a local reporter helped him cut through the red tape and bureaucracy and find a solution.

RV transport drivers are getting higher wages after shortage, but it may be temporary

Some Elkhart area RV manufacturers have temporarily increased their pay rates for transport drivers in an attempt to address the four- to six-week backlog of units awaiting delivery. Sami Colby, owner of Hoosier RV Transport in Bristol, IN, was a driver for 30 years before becoming a transport firm owner and says manufacturers "have never paid enough for drivers to make a good living" at transporting RVs. "The whole thing has been the pay. Manufacturers this week opened up their purse strings, and it's going to help."

Report: Gas prices on way down after peaking in late April
Los Angeles Times
Just in time for the summer driving season, gas prices are on the way down after creeping up for weeks and hitting a peak in late April, a report says. Gas prices have been declining after reaching a national high of $3.65 per gallon on average on April 29, according to gas tracking website GasBuddy.com. Analysts say that many of the factors that contributed to the sharp rise in gas prices have now been resolved.

Mayflower RV dealership destroyed by deadly Arkansas tornado

RVDA member Mayflower RV, located on U.S. 40 in Mayflower, AR, was completely destroyed by a tornado that killed 16 people and decimated structures and vehicles in its path along Interstate 40 on the night of April 27.
