Former Disney customer service trainer is keynoter at RVDA convention

Learn how the top businesses survive and thrive from the man who helped shape Disney University's world-famous customer service training. The opening general session of the 2014 RV Dealers International Convention/Expo will feature keynote speaker Doug Lipp, who headed the training team at Disney's corporate headquarters in the '80s and is an internationally recognized expert on customer service and brand competitiveness. An RV owner himself, Lipp will share strategies and real-life situations that dealership personnel can relate to. The convention/expo begins on Nov. 10 with board meetings, education through Vendor Training +Plus, and Partners in Progress meetings. The opening general session is Tuesday, Nov. 11, and education sessions will continue through Friday morning, Nov. 14.

Supreme Court justice Clarence Thomas, actor Robert De Niro and retired paper manufacturing executive Jim Meyers are all part of a growing and wildly diverse segment of retirees and near-retirees who are hitting the road in RVs to see places they missed during hectic careers. As Meyers puts it, "When I was working, my life was an endless run of meetings. One thing I wanted when I retired was to not have a schedule and to get to know places I'd only seen from airplanes on business trips."

Camping, recreation outlook good for Memorial Day weekend

One of the world's prettiest campgrounds, the boat-in campground at Lake Tahoe's Emerald Bay, will open May 23 in time for Memorial Day weekend. Across Northern California, it's well known that the big recreation lakes are low across the board for May. But a half dozen, including Ice House Reservoir in the Sierra Nevada and Lake Siskiyou in the north state, are right to the brim – and many more are in great shape.

The RV Industry Association's Trouble Shooter Clinic for RV technicians will be offered Nov. 17-21 at the Holiday Inn Hotel & Suites Pointe-Claire Montreal Airport in Montreal, Canada. Three tracks will be offered: Running Gear, Slide Outs and Towing (Nov. 17-18, 16 hours of CE credit); Appliance (Nov. 18-21, 32 hours of CE credit); and Power Sources (Nov. 19-21; 24 hours of CE credit). Classes are kept small to ensure that participants get plenty of hands-on experience.

America's Largest RV Show about to get even larger

America's Largest RV Show, held annually in Hershey, Pennsylvania, is preparing for another record-breaking year. Sales of manufacturer exhibit space at this year's drawing have exceeded last year's by almost 19 percent. Only one manufacturer space is left, even though officials extended exhibit space into the parking lot to accommodate the show's growth.

Go RVing leads require quick action

Swift follow-up is the key to getting the highest return on Go RVing leads, according to a sales match analysis by global data and marketing solutions firm IHS Automotive, which incorporated Polk into its business last year. The analysis shows 36 percent of total RV sales made by Go RVing prospects are made within 90 days of the lead entering the system. A total of 53 percent are made within 180 days. Dealers not signed up for the program still have plenty of time to take advantage of the 2014 program.

American Institute of Architects takes Airstream on the road

The American Institute of Architects, Vermont Chapter (AIAVT) bought a 1969 Indian River Globetrotter Airstream and refurbished it for use as a mobile exhibit to show off the new and innovative things chapter members were doing. AIAVT plans to take it to rural communities that don't have access to architectural exhibits. The renovation was challenging, acknowledges architecture professor Tolya Stonorov, whose students carried out the project." An Airstream is like a haiku — everything in it must serve a purpose."
