Rand McNally, RVDA team up to provide dealer, service location info to RV enthusiasts

Rand McNally and the Recreation Vehicle Dealers Association of North America are working together to provide RVers easy electronic access to RV dealers and service providers. The information, available this summer, will be included in new mobile phone apps and website maps and directions, as well as onboard Rand McNally's TripMaker RVND GPS units. Rand McNally is developing a dealer-locator app for iOS and Android mobile phones that will let RVers quickly access a list of nearby RVDA member dealers across the United States and Canada. Each listing will include hours of operation, contact information, services provided, and any available specials. Marketed by RVDA to its membership, the app will be available mid-summer. More

Gas prices drop for 10th week in a row

Gasoline prices have dropped for the 10th week in a row and soon may fall below $3.50 a gallon. If that happens this month or next, it will be the first time since Jan. 30. The average price of a gallon of gas in the United States was $3.58 in the Energy Information Administration's weekly survey. That's down from $3.62 last week and $3.76 a year ago at this time. In April, prices peaked just shy of $4 a gallon. According to AAA's daily survey, the nationwide average fell to $3.49 Tuesday. More

Retired Navy SEAL Tim Loen and his wife tent-camped during the early years of their marriage, but as their family grew, they progressed from pop-up camper to travel trailer to motorhome to fifth wheel toy hauler. After Loen retired, the couple pursued a longtime dream and opened their own RV dealership in Chesapeake, Va., Chesapeake RV Solutions, an RVDA member. Now, Loen is participating in a fundraiser to benefit families of Navy SEALs who were killed in action. More

Record number of drivers to hit the road July 4

Motorists will travel in record numbers for the Independence Day holiday this year, encouraged by cheaper gasoline, says travel group AAA. It predicts that 35.5 million people will drive 50 miles or more away from home between July 3 and July 8, up 4 percent from last year and the largest number in the last decade. A gallon of gasoline is expected to sell for $3.57 during the holiday, down about 3 percent from a year earlier, AAA said. The price forecast is based on the year's average gasoline prices through June 11. More

The number of competitors at the 2012 Pennsylvania State Shoot is up this year after several off years, and event officials are hoping that means the recession is, in fact, over. Recession or no, the RV lot at the grounds is full. "The RV lot is always sold out," says tournament director Chuck Fritzges. "That's sold out by April every year. People with more disposable income don't have to think twice about spending it, particularly if it's on an activity they love, and those people are a kind of insurance for the shoot." More
