The spooky side of RVs in the wilderness
Slate
Professional photographer Frank Hallam Day's strikingly beautiful images of RVs glowing in the night, nestled peacefully among lush tropical vegetation, give most viewers feelings of coziness and tranquility. That, however, is not what Day had in mind. "I see them as life-support pods out there in a somewhat threatening nightscape," Day says of the series. "They're not out there having fun so much as lurking and hiding...in a dark and threatening world." To create the images, Day traveled up and down Florida posing as a wildlife photographer looking to document owls. "The weird thing is that after four years of shooting, I never saw an owl, and I'm a birder!" Day says.

Investor's Business Daily
Midway through the summer driving season, signs of the U.S. recovery go by in a blur as vacationers ply the byways driving or towing proud new RVs. Winnebago's sales rose 35 percent over the past three quarters. Thor's sales surged 30 percent in its fiscal first quarter, which ended in October, but slowed to a 13 percent gain in the April quarter.

Road trip: If you rent an RV, you're going to buy one
The Christian Science Monitor
Never rent a recreational vehicle if you don't want to buy one. Last year, Laurie Toupin and her husband planned a mystery trip — a scavenger hunt with clues led her and the kids to an RV rental store, where they packed up a motor home and set off for Niagara Falls. After that, the kids never wanted to see their little popup again. They had been forever spoiled, and so had Toupin and her husband. They loved the freedom and independence of traveling with their home. So they bought an RV. The first time she sat behind the wheel, a long forgotten feeling of wanderlust resurfaced, and almost immediately, she began planning a cross-country trip.

Vermont's Nomad Airstream finds success with customization
Seven Days
RVDA member Nomad RV in Plattsburgh, VT, has found success with customizing new and used Airstreams. From four employees in 2010, the company has grown to 17, many of whom are former airplane technicians. Nomad customized a personal Airstream for Michael Dell, of Dell Computer fame, to put on the beach at his summer house. It featured two bedrooms, with a five-foot glass shower and a red-oak interior.

Alaskan trip of a lifetime: Top of the World
By Laura Weaver
Our long, arduous journey to Alaska became even more memorable as we entered Top of the World Highway, the 65-mile roadway leading to the Alaska border. I hadn't been keen on taking it after hearing about how narrow, winding, and unpaved it is, but it was well worth the effort. The scenery was breathtaking — much of it unobstructed 360-degree views. We were above the tree line in places, with the highest elevation at 4,515 feet. We could see for miles and miles, and the colors were spectacular — the greens, golds, reds, pinks, browns and blacks of the panorama below. We truly felt on top of the world.

Six years of living in an RV ends at the North Carolina shore
The News & Observer
Dennis and HollyAnn Rogers didn't know where they were going, much less when they'd be back. They just knew that they were ready to retire after 31 years as a newspaper columnist and a community college grant writer. They'd never spent a single night in an RV, much less lived in one full-time. All they knew was that his cousin Charlie would sell them his old RV cheaply, and they were ready for an adventure. It ended up lasting six years and taking them across the country and Canada.

Just how many RVs will you see on a cross-country trip?
The Elkhart Truth
That question had a surprising answer on a recent trip from Colorado to Indiana. While driving along the Interstate highways, RVs naturally catch the eye of someone from north central Indiana, since 83 percent of all recreational vehicles in North America are built in and around Elkhart County. Keeping a tally of every RV along the way showed a surprising trend.
