Sales of RVs rise as consumers seek vacation homes on wheels
The Baltimore Sun    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Sales of RVs are on the rise as U.S. consumers give in to the lure of the open road — with amenities — and are once again able to get credit to buy what many consider an affordable second home. RV sales have risen since 2010, and the number of RV owners today is at a record 9 million. Many people are "just fed up with traditional travel hassles," says Greg Merkel, owner and president of Leo's Vacation Center in Gambrills, MD, an RVDA member. "We're seeing a lot of first-time buyers who have traveled other ways and are tired of the air travel or questionable accommodations when they get where they're going." More

RV industry reinvented
The Register Guard, Eugene, OR    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The RV industry's decline was a heavy blow to Junction City, OR, but many people there have reinvented themselves. Some started companies that refurbish and repair high-end used coaches. At Guaranty RV, an RVDA member, business is steady and the company has hired 16 new techs this year. General manager Shannon Nill says the dealership has been using some new marketing techniques, including twice-monthly seminars and a weekly Tuesday night barbecue that it promotes by handing out fliers at RV campgrounds and service centers. At a recent gathering, 134 couples showed up. More

Putting a price on customer loyalty
Harvard Business Review    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Today's consumers aren't passive about product pricing — they root out and disseminate information about a company's prices, using social media to publicize policies they believe are unfair. And they don't hesitate to abandon companies that cross the line. Marco Bertini, assistant professor at London Business School, outlines how to price goods so that customers will buy them — and remain advocates for your brand. More

In 360-degree vistas, Google Street View delivers road trips through five California national parks
The StarTribune    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Imagine being the only driver on a two-lane asphalt highway as the stark desolation of Death Valley National park passes on each side and the crystal blue sky stretches up from the horizon. Or picture a tight left turn on Yosemite's Glacier Point Road where the iconic Half Dome suddenly appears. The Google Street View service that's brought us Earth as we might not be able to afford to see it — as well as criticism that some of the scenes invade privacy — has this month turned its 360-degree cameras on road trips through five national parks in California.
