Home on the road: More Americans buying, renting motorhomes, towables
The Economist    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
This summer, some 20 million Americans have hit the road in motorhomes or towable caravans. El Monte RV, a national RV rental chain, observes that rentals are up about 40 percent over last year, with the strongest growth in the Northeast. The manager at the El Monte branch in Linden, NJ, is seeing double-digit growth over last year. RV sales are up, too. According to the Recreation Vehicle Industry Association, wholesale shipments have increased 5 percent over 2010 and are expected to grow another 7 percent by the end of the year. More

PR-USA.NET    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Weak overall consumer spending didn't slow down RV makers in the past few months. Strong sales from several of the industry's leaders were very encouraging. Thor Industries Inc. saw its sales jump 15 percent, and sales may move even higher as the company gears up for a major open house in September. Overall, RV sales of all varieties have impressed this summer, despite less than ideal economic conditions. More

So dealers are stocking units with family-friendly features such as bunk beds and entertainment centers. More

NBCNews.com    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
For many, summer means taking time off work to hit the road in an RV. But for some free-spirited adventurers, summer never ends — their RVs are mobile offices, thanks to the growing ubiquity of wireless Internet access. Winter Texans headed south to Gulf Coast; retailers ready
Austin American-Statesman    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The Texas coast undergoes a sea change as fall progresses. Fewer people swim in the Gulf of Mexico; more stand in it and fish. Early-bird specials pop up at almost every restaurant. There is less sun-bleached blond hair and more natural white. By the time Thanksgiving rolls around, the invasion is complete: It's Winter Texan season. Cold-fleeing retirees park their RVs or rent condos and hunker down in the warmth for winter. They often stay until the annual March invasion of college students on spring break. Yeah, this is a lot nicer than shoveling snow. More
