More buyers seeking high-end RVs with all the comforts of home

There is a growing number of people buying top-of-the-line motorhomes, as RV sales continue to climb. Shipments of RVs to dealerships grew nearly 10 percent to 192,065 units in the first half of this year compared with 174,918 in the same period last year. Shipments of the most expensive Class A RVs climbed 23 percent to 11,274.

RVDA member Rocky Mountain RV & Marine started an Albuquerque RV dealership chain reaction by challenging Myers RV Center to participate in the ALS "Ice Bucket Challenge" and get donations rolling in. Ten members of the Rocky Mountain RV & Marine team were soaked in ice water with the help of two forklifts and team members looking for some payback. "It was cool!" said Bob Scholl, Assistant General Manager of the dealership. "Actually, it was freezing but worth it for a good cause!" The Meyers RV Center team accepted the challenge and got soaked as well.

RV industry sees rebound revving up

The RV industry is enjoying a smooth ride as the recession that devastated it gets further in the distance. Key manufacturers and suppliers have announced recent expansions, the stock market is at an all-time high, and consumers are more confident in the future, industry leaders say. The rebound is also being fueled by retirements of baby boomers and an increase in the number of younger people interested in RVs, said Mark Bowersox, executive director of the Recreation Vehicle Indiana Council.

RV Dealer sponsors 'Ugly RV' contest

Sometimes ugliness can be a source of luck. Just ask Jim Thompson Jr. of Richmond, IN, who owns a bright green 1983 Fleetwood Southwind motorhome with his son, James III. The Pickle, as it is known in the family, recently was named winner of the Ugly RV Contest sponsored by RVDA member Tom Raper RVs. The title brought with it a check for $1,000.

Consider the Winnebago. Just five years ago, the brontosaurus of consumer vehicles looked as if it might be on the verge of extinction. Sales had been sliding for several years before plunging off a precipice as the financial crisis deepened into a global recession in 2009. That year, Winnebago Industries tallied $211 million in sales, less than a fifth of the 2004 figure.

Updating a travel icon for the professional millennial

As part of a drive to expand its customer base to include more millennials, Airstream Inc. turned to the Columbus College of Art & Design’s MindMarket studios to develop a mobile office and living space product concept. Industrial design students from CCAD spent a semester designing and building the prototype, turning to plastics in several instances in part to fit the lightweight needs of iconic aluminum Airstream travel trailers.

Now, more than 30 years later, the pickup has been replaced by a motorhome, and his set-up includes tables with seating for 18 adorned with long-stemmed wine glasses, glass plates, and silverware.
