The Elkhart Truth    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Jayco, America's largest privately owned RV manufacturer, has donated the use of two motorhomes as support vehicles for the Tour of Duty, a group of 24 American and Australian military, firefighters and police riding bicycles across the United States in tribute to Sept. 11, 2001, first responders. Funds raised along the way support the Wounded Warrior project and the New York Police and Fire widows and children's fund. The cyclists stopped at Jayco headquarters in Middlebury, IN, on the way to New York, the final destination of their 2,600-mile trip. Jayco has been one of the ride's main sponsors since it started in 2010. More

WBND-TV    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
24/7 Wall Street released its top 10 American cities for job growth and guess who's No. 8 on the list? Elkhart, IN. Chamber of Commerce vice president Kyle Hannon says he's not surprised because of all the growth in the RV industry this year. "We were leading into the recession, but now we are leading out," Hannon says. The city was hit hard by the recession. "Unemployment was close to 20 percent, and everybody who wasn't looking for work knew someone who was looking for work," Hannon recalls. More

The many roads to retirement
Get Rich Slowly via MSN Money    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
You know the cliché about people retiring to an RV? People really do it — and it's inexpensive. Ron and Barb Hofmeister did it for 14 years after retiring in their 50s. They explain in their book, "Movin' On: Living and Traveling Full Time in a Recreational Vehicle," that their living expenses ranged from $1,500 to $3,000 a month, but it can be done for much less. "The lifestyle can be adjusted to almost any income," Barb Hofmeister said. Those numbers likely have risen a bit over the years, but not drastically. One strategy they used: When gas prices were high, they stayed in one place longer. More

Families take final summer RV road trips over holiday weekend
Aberdeen American News    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Wylie Park in Aberdeen, SD, was packed with people enjoying the Labor Day weekend, traditionally the last hurrah of summer. Among the many families were Dani and James Olson and their three sons. The family set up its RV on a campsite and decorated it with colored lights across the pull-out awning. They brought a grill so James could prepare the food. "I love not having to cook," Dani said. While Labor Day often is considered the last weekend of summer, the family plans to take one more trip in September, staying closer to Bismarck, ND, so they don't have to drive as far. More

AAA: Labor Day travel up this year
CNN    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Recession and Tropical Storm Earl aside, more Americans were expected to have hit the roads and airways on Labor Day weekend. The American Automobile Association projected a nearly 10 percent jump in holiday travel over this time last year. Some 34.4 million Americans were expected to visit family or friends during the five-day holiday period, traveling at least 50 miles away from home, AAA spokeswoman Nancy White said. Last year, 31 million travelers vacationed during the Labor Day holiday. "Consumer confidence is up this year," said White. "Consumer debt is down and there's a lot of pent-up demand." More

103-year-old camper: 'Never too old for Nebraska State Fair'
KOLN-TV    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The Nebraska State Fair campgrounds offer water, electricity, and safe RV parking just a short walk from the fair. One very senior Nebraskan has made the campgrounds her home away from home while she explores the exhibits and food. You're never too old for the Nebraska State Fair: that was the message that 103 year-old Pansy Mueller, native daughter of Broken Bow, NE, made clear by example. "We retired, bought an RV, sold our home to our son, and we've been on the road ever since with Mom," says Pansy's daughter, Laura Miller. More

Why no company should hire people who use poor grammar
Harvard Business Review    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Author Kyle Wiens, CEO of two online businesses, says good grammar makes good business sense. Good grammar bestows credibility, especially on the Internet, where words are all you have. "People judge your business if you can't tell the difference between their, there and they're," says Wiens, who gives a grammar test to everybody, including salespeople. "If it takes someone more than 20 years to notice how to properly use 'it's', that's not a learning curve I'm comfortable with." People who make fewer mistakes on a grammar test also make fewer mistakes when doing things unrelated to writing — like stocking shelves or labeling parts. More

How to break free from email jail
Harvard Business Review    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Most inboxes and calendars are gorged with junk because the dominant paradigm of communication is information "push" — info constantly is being pushed onto people. Constant interruptions caused by notifications (email, texts, etc.) disrupt your working rhythm and greatly reduce your productivity and effectiveness. Systems that let you turn off disruptions or be notified only of urgent matters are gaining ground. More
