The RV Dealers International Convention/Expo wrapped up Oct. 5, but a follow up webinar on Evanne Schmarder's video marketing workshop already is planned for Oct. 31. "More Video Marketing Mojo" will continue the discussion that Schmarder began at the convention on the power of video marketing and why YouTube is only one of the many ways dealers can use and distribute video content. Jeff Hirsch of Campers Inn of Kingston, NH, became RVDA's new chairman of the board Oct. 3 during the RV Dealers International Convention/Expo. Hirsch, who has held every officer position as well as being the New Hampshire delegate, will serve as chairman for two years. One of his goals, he told convention attendees, is to emphasize the importance of RVDA membership. "RVDA must continue to grow and evolve so that membership is seen as vital," he said. "We need to reach out and connect with every dealer possible." More

Butch Thomas receives RVDA's James B. Summers Award

RVDA Field Representative Butch Thomas was honored Oct. 3 for his longtime relationship with the association, including 30 years as a dealer member, service on the board of directors, and his current work promoting the value of the association to dealers. "There are people who, when you see them or hear their name, make you think R-V-D-A," said RVDA President Phil Ingrassia as he presented Thomas with the James B. Summers Award during the annual RV Dealers International Convention/Expo. Ingrassia credited Thomas with being part of the legislative effort to keep RV dealers out of the jurisdiction of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. More

There are no good statistics on just how many boomers are taking retirement on the road. But some indicators — steadily rising traffic at houseboat and RV websites, and a growing number of retirement-age members on couchsurfing.com — confirm the trend. One driver, according to journalist Samantha Dunn, who's written about RV retirees for the website Next Avenue, is that wireless technology allows you to stay in touch with friends and family even while living on the road. Then there's the financial angle. Today's retirees have limited budgets and long life expectancies. Living on the road for a year or five can be a way to spend less than hanging on to the big house or moving into a service-heavy retirement community. More

Heart attack survivor becomes zealous advocate of exercise

There's a certain irony that Colon Terrell narrowly missed being cast on the reality TV show "Survivor." Little did he know that a decade later, he would make the cut in a real-life battle for survival, barely escaping with his life after a heart attack at age 60 that required quintuple bypass surgery. But Terrell, a longtime runner, took these challenges in stride. The 64-year-old Raleigh, NC, native decided to celebrate his life, and his recent retirement, with a new challenge. He and his wife traveled from town to town in an RV so that Colon could walk across the country in six months, logging 3,275 miles on foot across 11 states from Manteo, NC, to Los Angeles. More

Trumbo, 65, of Kennewick, WA, plans to juggle fixing cars, restoring antiques, repairing his house, finishing installing a heating and air conditioning system, remodeling his 1916 rail car and traveling the country in his RV for home-school experiences for his daughters, both age 14. Mobile home and RV park operators in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas say all indications point to a successful year for winter Texan visitors. At South Padre Island, there's been a 10 percent increase in the number of inquiries from prospective winter Texans, says Lacey Ekberg, Convention & Visitors Bureau director. The CVB has received 5,000 to 6,000 calls per month since July, with most coming from the Midwest and northern states, including Illinois, Ohio, and Minnesota. More
