The RV Dealers International Convention/Expo wrapped up Oct. 5, but a follow up webinar on Evanne Schmarder's video marketing workshop already is planned for Oct. 31. "More Video Marketing Mojo" will continue the discussion that Schmarder began at the convention on the power of video marketing and why YouTube is only one of the many ways dealers can use and distribute video content. Schmarder also is an excellent resource for video content ideas. Registration for this RV Learning Center webinar is free. More

RVDA Field Representative Butch Thomas was honored Oct. 3 for his longtime relationship with the association, including 30 years as a dealer member, service on the board of directors, and his current work promoting the value of the association to dealers. "There are people who, when you see them or hear their name, make you think R-V-D-A," said RVDA President Phil Ingrassia as he presented Thomas with the James B. Summers Award during the annual RV Dealers International Convention/Expo. Ingrassia credited Thomas with being part of the legislative effort to keep RV dealers out of the jurisdiction of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. More

Rambling retirees trade homes for boats, rocking chairs for RVs
Reuters    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
There are no good statistics on just how many boomers are taking retirement on the road. But some indicators — steadily rising traffic at houseboat and RV websites, and a growing number of retirement-age members on — confirm the trend. One driver, according to journalist Samantha Dunn, who's written about RV retirees for the website Next Avenue, is that wireless technology allows you to stay in touch with friends and family even while living on the road. Then there's the financial angle. Today's retirees have limited budgets and long life expectancies. Living on the road for a year or five can be a way to spend less than hanging on to the big house or moving into a service-heavy retirement community. More

RV popularity revving up for those who love the road
Las Vegas Review-Journal    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Like most wide-eyed, wishful Americans, Dennis Soukup daydreams of someday hitting it big. "If I hit the lottery, I'm buying a Zephyr. I want to retire full time into one of them." At 45 feet long, 500-horsepower, and $500,000, the Zephyr is the Holy Grail of RVs for Soukup and his wife, Linda, who are one of the 8.9 million U.S. households that owns an RV. The Soukups currently own a 2006 Tiffin Phaeton but have dreams of moving up. More

Retirees urged to 'practice' retirement, keep time on their side
AdvisorOne    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Baby boomers in their 60s often feel it's too late to make a difference in their future retirement security. But that may not be the case, according to Christine Fahlund, CFP, vice president and senior financial planner at T. Rowe Price. In a recent keynote presentation at the Retirement Income Symposium in Boston, Fahlund suggested that by "practicing" retirement until age 70 without quitting work, boomers can still get time on their side to try things out like RV travel. Heart attack survivor becomes zealous advocate of exercise
The News & Observer    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
There's a certain irony that Colon Terrell narrowly missed being cast on the reality TV show "Survivor." Little did he know that a decade later, he would make the cut in a real-life battle for survival, barely escaping with his life after a heart attack at age 60 that required quintuple bypass surgery. But Terrell, a longtime runner, took these challenges in stride. The 64-year-old Raleigh, NC, native decided to celebrate his life, and his recent retirement, with a new challenge. He and his wife traveled from town to town in an RV so that Colon could walk across the country in six months, logging 3,275 miles on foot across 11 states from Manteo, NC, to Los Angeles. More

Margaret Clark's small camper van is nestled between large RVs at the Kansas State fairgrounds. The spunky 88-year-old considers it her home away from home — and every fall she is around people she regards as family. "This really is a family reunion," she says. "You get to know these people." She was speaking of the 40th annual Kansas Good Sam Samboree 2012 at the Kansas State Fairgrounds — an RV convention with nearly 200 people from almost a dozen states, some as far away as New Hampshire.
