Former RVDA member/field rep Butch Thomas and sister return to World Series decades after first visit
KTVI-TV
Morris ("Butch") and Nancy Thomas were just two years and 11 months old when their mother took them to their first World Series — Game 7 of the 1946 World Series. The Cardinals won that game 4-3 and later won the series 4 games to 3 over none other than the Boston Red Sox. The Globe-Democrat published a photo of the two children and their mother at Sportsman's Park, and it was believed that they were the youngest fans at the game. This week, the siblings are returning to the World Series to see, once again, the Cardinals take on the boys from Beantown.

Attention, RV techs — recent changes to recertification process
RVTechnician.com
RVIA and The Mike Molino RV Learning Center relaunched the RV Technician Certification Prep Course this week. There are two modules available through the new platform. The Registered level course will award 15 hours of credit toward recertification, and the Certified level 25 hours toward recertification. These courses will be available for recertification credit hours to first-time course enrollees. Courses align with core knowledge areas of certification tests. Enrolling in both courses will yield the 40 hours needed to recertify. If a tech needs hours to supplement training hours already received, using only one module is an option.

Please note: The RVDA-RVIA Technician Certification Governing Board recently voted to allow technicians to use the RV Tech Cert Prep Course one time only to recertify. Techs who have previously used the RV Tech Cert Prep Course online training to recertify are now ineligible to enroll in the new courses for recertification purposes.

Roving retirees do good, live practically free
CNNMoney
For some seniors, retirement is anything but boring — or expensive. These 60-, 70- and even 80-year olds travel the country for months at a time, regardless of whether they have flush retirement savings or modest incomes. Some volunteer at state and national parks, often in exchange for free room and board. Others join volunteer groups that roll into towns in their RVs, ready to perform good deeds such as helping homeowners rebuild after natural disasters. All they ask for in return is a place to park their units.

Renting an RV offers chance to explore camping
St. Louis Post-Dispatch
The children's fall school break gave this family the chance to try renting an RV and getting away to the Ozarks at the peak of the autumn leaf change. In a secluded, off-season state park, they fished, hiked, cooked s'mores over a fire and discovered what RVing is all about — comfort and convenience.

Opinion: CFPB is trick, not treat for taxpayers
The Detroit News
The options for creative Halloween costumes in Washington, D.C., are endless — who wouldn't be scared to see a Nancy Pelosi show up on their door step looking for handouts, or a Ted Cruz lookalike ranting about loafer-wearing lobbyists? But the award for best disguise in D.C. this year goes to the misnamed Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. A recent report from the Bipartisan Policy Center's Financial Regulatory Reform Initiative Task Force details the Jekyll and Hyde nature of this unaccountable bureaucracy — and why taxpayers have good reason to be scared.

Des Moines Register
State revenue officials report a "huge response" to a one-time offer allowing Iowa tax dodgers to settle their debts if they have been illegally putting out-of-state license plates on motorhomes. Dozens of settlements are being reached, and just over $100,000 in back taxes has been collected since the offer was announced in late August, said the state revenue agency.

In this humorous piece, St. George News contributor Emily Haynes theorizes on the origins of the RV: Men have "a genetic need" for outdoor adventures that enable them to rough it, but since they also "appreciate the company of women who smell nice," they invented the recreational vehicle.

Wine-tasting and RVing
By Michael Charland
My wife and I enjoy fine wines, and our full-time RV lifestyle has allowed us to explore various wine-growing areas in the United States and Canada. Prior to our life on the road, we had enjoyed visiting the Napa area of California several times. Now, with our mobile lifestyle, we've traveled to other areas that have a large concentration of wineries and some great wines. I wanted to focus on one area that may go unnoticed but shouldn't — Walla Walla, WA.

Cutting the strings: How to hold your employees accountable
By Harry J. Friedman
As a business owner, are you constantly pulled in different directions, puppet-like, by your employees' needs and demands? Much of the string-pulling is the direct result of developing a staff that relies on you to do things for them. Maybe you haven't trained them to be capable of doing their jobs. Maybe you've weakened them to the point where they depend on you for the answers. Every time you answer a question your employee should have known or been able to figure out on his or her own, you've attached another string to yourself.
