The Navarro County Sheriff's Office recovered multiple stolen vehicles and trailers Wednesday following a traffic stop in the 300 block of SW 0020, also known as Bonner Road. The items are worth an estimated $300,000 to $500,000. According to Sheriff Elmer Tanner, the case, which is still under investigation, began early Wednesday morning when Deputy Eric Wilson performed a traffic stop of a vehicle that had left the location.

Dallas County has sworn in its first black sheriff to lead the nation's seventh-largest jail system after former sheriff Lupe Valdez resigned to run for governor. Marian Brown took the oath during a midnight ceremony Monday. The Dallas Morning News reports that Brown has been with the department for three years and was Valdez's recommended choice for a successor. The 52-year-old Brown will serve as interim sheriff until voters elect a new sheriff in November.

In a shooting early Wednesday in eastern Williamson County that left two people dead, authorities said it appeared that a man shot and killed a woman before turning the weapon on himself. Authorities identified the couple as 42-year-old Ellen Rachelle DeHart, and 48-year-old Richard Lee DeHart.

A Hurst police officer narrowly avoided being hit by a vehicle Sunday when it lost control on the icy road. Officer Jonathan Cramer was responding to an accident on State Highway 121 in Hurst. A car had crashed in a slick spot. Dashcam video released by the department shows Cramer carefully walking on the ice near the vehicle when another car slides toward him out of control.

The mannequin challenge might be a relic of 2016, but that didn't stop a Texas sheriff from uploading a video of his version of the challenge as the calendar turns to 2018. Williamson County Sheriff Robert Chody posted on Twitter that he was in Kansas City, Missouri, during the holiday and was "forced" to shop at the Country Club Plaza. The sheriff, who represents more than a half million people just north of Austin recruited his oldest and youngest children to play the role of storefront window mannequins in a store along 47th Street on the Plaza.

In the early morning hours of Dec. 31, deputies from the Douglas County (Colorado) Sheriff's Office were called to the Copper Canyon Apartments in Highlands Ranch, about 10 miles south of Denver. The original report was of a disturbance inside one of the apartments. Shortly after deputies were admitted to the apartment of Matthew Riehl, Riehl opened fire on the deputies with a rifle, killing Deputy Zackari Parrish III, 29, and wounding three deputies, plus an officer from the Castle Rock Police Department.
