With decades of combined law enforcement experience, his new hires include former Texas Rangers and longtimers from the Denton Police Department. He also rehired former sheriff's office employees, adding more institutional knowledge to his command staff.

Unstable tax revenue means Texas lawmakers are expected to curb spending when the 2017 legislative session convenes and crafts a new budget. But, despite spending cuts, state leaders are urging legislators to prioritize the implementation of police safety measures. In October, Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick said he would ask legislators for up to $20 million to supply more protective bulletproof vests to nearly 60,000 law enforcement employees statewide. The improved vests are capable of stopping high-caliber rifle bullets.

Two people were arrested after a girl was found with wounds consistent with sexual assault though a relative claimed she had been attacked by dogs, officials said. The 1-year-old girl was in stable condition Tuesday after being hospitalized with life-threatening wounds. The girl, who will be taken into Child Protective Services custody, had stab wounds to her upper body and private parts, Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar said.

A 5-year-old girl is dead and the child's mother is in custody following an assault in Kyle, the Hays County Sheriff's Office said Friday. According to a press release, deputies received a call around 12:50 p.m. Thursday about an assault at a home located on Willow Terrace in the Green Pastures subdivision. When deputies arrived at the scene they found a 58-year-old man stabbed mulitple times. The press release said the man told deputies that a woman inside the home had stabbed him. Deputies said Hays County SWAT entered the home to find the 5-year-old child deceased.

After being hit in the head with a bullet shortly after midnight on New Year's Eve, state Rep. Armando Martinez plans to file legislation aimed at reducing or preventing celebratory gun firings. What exactly that legislation will look like is unclear, but it would possibly work to regulate or prevent celebratory gunfire, he said. The next legislative session starts on Jan. 10.

Law enforcement officers in Harris County, Texas were engaged in an unfolding standoff with multiple home invasion suspects. One report said as many as 10 suspects were shooting at police from a roof on Jan. 2. Other reports said there were fewer suspects, and the standoff was focused on a Valero gas station. One station reported reported that the shooting started with a home invasion. Details were still unfolding.
