"Hey, hey, what's your name; keep talking to me," Deputy Donald Landry told the man, who was lying on the floor. The man seemed to be losing consciousness. Then, suddenly, the deputy identified the potentially fatal wound: A gunshot in the area of the femoral artery of the man's right leg.

Atascosa County Sheriff David Soward has launched a campaign aimed at denying parole for an accomplice in the killing three law enforcement officers during an ambush in October 1999. In a Facebook post, Soward said he initiated the campaign "to give the friends and family of these three officers more justice and peace of mind and keep (Kenneth) Vodochodsky in prison as long as possible."

Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said a 10-year-old was shot by his 12-year-old friend with a long rifle in the northwest area of Houston. He called the shooting accidental.

Animal health regulators report that illegal racing at so-called "bush tracks" is associated with the spread of serious horse diseases, such as equine infectious anemia and piroplasmosis, and puts horse welfare at risk.

An off-duty Houston police officer shot an armed robber Wednesday at a Walmart in northeast Harris County, authorities said.
Around 2:40 p.m., a man held a customer service clerk at gunpoint near the front of the store in the 9200 block of North Sam Houston Parkway, according to the Harris County Sheriff's Office. The officer, a 17-year veteran, was standing nearby when she intervened and fired at least one round.

President Donald Trump signed the Debbie Smith Reauthorization Act into law on Dec. 30. The legislation helps fund the testing of the massive volume of backlogged rape kits.
The law gives $151 million to the Department of Justice for each of Fiscal Years 2019-2024 for the Debbie Smith DNA Backlog Grant Program; $12.5 million for DNA training and education programs; and $30 million for the Sexual Assault Forensic Exam Grant Program.
