Comal County OKs ballistic shields, new trucks for sheriff's office

Officers in Comal County will now have 30 bullet-resistant shields available for school safety emergencies. The Comal County Commissioners Court approved federal and state grant funding of more than $206,000 for the ballistic shields. The shields from a national vendor will be assigned to 17 peace officers contracted by Comal Independent School District and 13 patrol supervisors, according to Comal County documents.

El Paso County Sheriff's Office 'most wanted' FURever Home

The "Most Wanted FURever Home" program will feature animals in need of a home each week, according to the El Paso County Sheriff's Office release. "All MOST WANTED" pets will come with their spay/neuter surgery, age-appropriate vaccinations, microchip and registration. Pets will also be sent home with pet food and supplies; like a bowl, leash and collar.

Arts Council holds drawing contest for inmates

The Arts Council Wichita Falls partnered with the Wichita County Sheriff’s Office for their Art in Transition program, which provides art lessons to inmates who meet good behavior requirements. Over 100 inmates participated and submitted drawings under the theme "Winter Holidays."
"People who are in this situation are in jail, for whatever reason, do have talents and skills, things that are not necessarily obviously recognized once you're in that kind of situation," Arts Council Program Coordinator Kristine Thueson said.

Authorities: Scammers claiming to raise money for Dimmitt Country Club charities

Castro County Sheriff's Office is warning the public about scammers lying about raising money with the Dimmitt Country Club.
Officials said the scam consists of a caller claiming to be sponsoring the country club and raising money for the country club's charities, such as the American Cancer Society.
The phone number is from the Mount Vernon area and is (903) 466-0814.

An unlikely bond was forged between a retired deputy and an inmate at a Virginia corrections facility after the inmate reportedly saved the deputy from choking. According to KCRA News, Curtis Harrell was in a summer workforce program where retired deputies teach skills to help inmates secure jobs after release when he saw Deputy Robert Rensch choking on a sandwich.

Pennsylvania county jail hires 18-year-old COs

A week after his 18th birthday last July, Braedon Reid was hired as a part-time corrections officer at Snyder County Prison. The Midd-West High School graduate was the first teenager hired by the county jail in an effort to improve staff recruitment and retention. Although applicants aged 18 and older are permitted to work in corrections, "There has always been a rule that we wouldn't hire anyone under 21," said Associate Warden Richard Frampton. "It's an industry standard."
